The saddest song you've heard

Sorry to be a buzzkill today, but I'll start.

Dave Alvin - The Man In The Bed.

I cry whenever I hear this and think of my Dad.

^^^^ Dave Alvin is a fantastic musician.

This song by Lucinda Williams is up there on the sad scale.

No one sings a sad song like Townes though.

I nominate two, by the same singer, Alison Krauss.

Lay My Burden Down and My Love Follows You Where You Go.

There is a haunting, sad quality to her voice that is very moving. I also happen to think that she sings like an angel.

"Marie," by Townes Van Zandt. Gut wrenching. It's difficult to acknowledge people so misguided, but the lyrics describe the pitiable hopelessness of some folks I've known.

This version is by my friend Bruce Payne who organizes a Townes Van Zandt festival every year in Fort Worth. In that background that's the late Preston Dunlap on guitar, and Bullet Harris on drums. Fine musicians, all.

Fast Car by Tracy Chapman

I'll add a YouTube video of it later, but this is a song that I won't listen to any more, as I find it too devastating if I dwell on it.

Two songs with upbeat tempos you've heard multiple times. These re-arrangements better convey the sad meaning of the lyrics:

Schmaltzy as hell, but if Christmas Shoes comes on the radio at Christmas, it's got me:

There's a children's book called "Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch that people seem to either love of find incredibly creepy. There is a song in it, also called love you forever, that ,by the time I read it on the last page, I'm always crying. My daughter, when she was a toddler, loved to try to get my wife and I to read it to her because she thought making us cry was funny. A very terrible reading:

No Hard Feelings - The Avett Brothers

Small Bump - Ed Sheeran. So representative of the wide range of feelings of a pregnancy lost. So hopeful until you get to the last verse when it suddenly goes acoustic and you know something bad is coming. Watching the video takes away some of the surprise so it might lose a bit of the impact. Might need to have been there.

Picture Window - Ben Folds

Land of the Living - Lucy Kaplansky, the whole thing gets me, but the last verse reminds me of a coworker whose family was afraid to leave their house and whose door got shot up the week or two after 9/11

This one could be about me and all the unrequited crushes I had in high school...

Broken Glass by David Francey

Saw you standing in the cafeteria line
I'd have given the world just to make you mine
Saw you at your locker, in the high school hall
And it didn't take a minute for my heart to fall
When you hear a sound like broken glass
That's my heart every time that girl walks past
When you hear a sound like the rush of wind
It's just me catching my breath again

Saw you on the bus, on the way back home
You were sitting so pretty, sitting all alone
Couldn't think of anything much to say
Except I'll love you forever, 'til my dying day
When you hear a sound like broken glass
That's my heart every time that girl walks past
When you hear a sound like the rush of wind
It's just me catching my breath again

Seeing her now makes me think of then
And I remember how and I remember when
You'd go to a party hoping that she'd show
Then you'd dance in the darkness to Abbey Road
When you hear a sound like broken glass
That's my heart every time that girl walks past
When you hear a sound like the rush of wind
It's just me catching my breath again
