Another cat R.I.P.

Cookie got put down today, a sweetheart of a calico, Age 12.

Cancer of the kidney and ongoing kidney and urination related issues. We could see obvious discomfort, the loss of weight (4 lbs in 6 mos.) When they start hiding in closets and places they don't otherwise go, you know they are in fear and not feeling well. The vet had nothing good to say last Monday, thus we watched closely as we've been down this road 6 times before.

A local cat she was abandoned by her mother and siblings, a neighbor grabbed her and we took her. She did not get along with our other female cat, but had a great life otherwise. Big diesel purr.

Heartbroken;

Yes, we've had 2 with kidney failure. The first was only 6 years old. He had been 23 lbs (maine coon) but quickly shrunk to 17 even with syringe feeding.

Have always loved my cats. Very sorry to hear of your loss.

BTW I had a vet tell me dry food has too much sugar in it and that's the main reason so many cats have kidney problems. I have no idea if this is true, but since I stopped feeding my cat dry food, he lost about 5lbs and went from being chunky to svelte.

We switched from dry food as well as our vet said that many cats don't particularly like drinking water. So, the wet food is a primary source of fluids for some of them. It made sense to us as our last one with kidney issues was rarely seen drinking.

I had read once that cats don't need a separate source of water if they eat wet food. Not sure how true and there are plenty of photo's and video's of cats in the wild drinking at water holes. Thus we've always had water bowls for our cats and they do drink from it.

If a domestic cat develops kidney issues they need to drink water frequently. They also need frequent access to a litter box and we were/are diligent at keeping the boxes clean. I had one cat urinating on the dining room rug, that was a headache. Our remaining female cat, who is 18+ years old, also has some mild kidney issues and frequent urination as well as hovering over the water bowl. It's kind of expected at her age which is near 90 in human years.

@Marylander. We did the syringe, re-hydrate thing with the 2nd cat suffering from kidney failure, it was a very difficult experience. The cat ended up running and hiding if my wife and I approached him together, as it took 2 people and the cat figured out what was going on. It's an option some vet's recommend and that I'll never do again.

I have a 13 year old cat that poops on the tile near the box. I thought it’s age and he is not doing well but after examining him closely I concluded he has a self entitlement complex being 13 and all. Now his nickname is AzzCat there isn’t anything wrong he is just being an azz After 13 years I just pick it up then clean the tile. I have my AzzCat kit handy...

Doing fluids for a cat isn't that hard if the cat is cooperative, and 2 of my 3 CRF cats were so cooperative I didn't need to hold onto the cat then. And one of those had been feral when I got her, I think the owners initial approach has a lot to do with how cooperative the cat is. Tanya's CRF site has some excellent information on doing fluids as well as care for CRF cats. The owner of that site (Helen) has a wealth of knowledge to share there.

Thanks for the mention of Tanya's Comprehensive Guide to Feline Chronic Kidney Disease. I've got it bookmarked and will go through it.

AzzCat is a walking Hazmat .. He is the stinkiest cat Iíve ever had! Burn your nose stinky. I know when it is AzzCat by the smell. The others cats stink but nowhere near AzzCat. Even when AzzCat uses the box and buries his poo itís still awful. His real name is Winkin but he is called Stinky Winky most of the time.

My beloved cat Newton. AKA: "Newt". passed at 19yrs. He and I had a special bond. He really didn't pay much attention to the rest of my family.
We have a very sweet cat now that interacts with everyone, but I still miss Newton. I think he imprinted on me as much as I imprinted on him...

One of my friends had a cat that didn't care for most people who looked a lot like one of mine. I was over at his house one day when he stepped out of the room for a minute and came back to found me holding and petting that cat. She'd walked up to me and acted like it was time for me to adore her, so I did. My friend had this stunned look on his face and said she doesn't do that.

My previous boy was sent across the rainbow bridge in August of 2017. He was FIV+, which possibly contributed to him developing lymphoma. He was such a ham. Ours was a true bromance.
