Cycling Survey

1. How old are you?
- 23
2. Fitness level on a scale of 1-10
- 8.5
3. Cycling skill, 1-10
- 8.5
4. Typical riding conditions?
- lately have been avoiding wet conditions, ride average 6x a week, covered about 6000km on 4 different bikes this last year.

- lots of cracked, poorly maintained pavement, rough uneven damaged sidewalks, some gravel, some dirt paths

5. What sort of riding your bike is best suited to? What's the geometry designed for?

- Smooth pavement, feels best above a certain speed, good mix between agile response and overall stability, particularly at speed. Still responds quick at low speed.

6. What would you change about your bike?

- bottom bracket clearance. I get some pedal striking
- i want a smaller diameter and thicker tire. Improved tire clearance within the frame.
- while I do like the quick and stable handling of my road bike, I think I'd be best off with the added durability of a gravel bike, considering the terrain I typically ride on.

7. Do you bike for fitness rides? Commuting? Joy rides? Do you drive or rely on your bike for everything?

- ... all three. Usually all at once. I dont drive. I rely on my bike and public transport for everything I need.

8. Do you focus on any sort of specific excersises in accessory to cycling? How does it improve your performance?

- I perform regular resistance training using kettlebells and resistance bands as well as isometric excersise to keep my joints and tendons strong. It really helps with power transfer when riding. Strong focus on lower back and ab work.
- regular walks help ease knee tenderness
- regular jogging greatly increases my agility on the bike

9. How often do you partake in long distance rides?

- not that often, but I've bikes maybe almost 100km in a day before a bunch of times. Looking forward to do it again now that I've lost weight and can keep my weight off the saddle.

10. Do you perform your own maintenance?

- with the help of my local bikehub and a friend's garage shop, I am luckily to have learned much about maintenance and can get help when needed. I almost never paid anything for repairs this last year. I do most of the work myself.

11. How does cycling impact your nutrition?

12. Is cycling more cardiovascular or muscular hypertrophy based, in your opinion?

- i find that it is more leg strength based, versus cardiovascular oriented such as running

13. Do you have more than one bike?
- i have a gt mountain bike which is a bit small for me. Don't really use it

14. How does cycling help you cope with stress, depression, etc?

As long as I dont do overdo, its extremely exhilarating, refreshing and a great way to start my day blasting through some windy gravel track.

15. Do you ride in the rain, cold weather?

Cold weather yes. I ride year round. But i avoid rainy rides with my new bike.

16. How cycling friendly is the area where you live? Accessibility to paved trails? Gravel? Singletrack?

Toronto has good cycling accessibility, maybe not quite so good in the suburbs, but we do have a decent amount of dirt paved and gravel paths within reasonable distance

1. How old are you?
74

2. Fitness level on a scale of 1-10
5

3. Cycling skill, 1-10
- 8.5

4. Typical riding conditions?
Pre-covid, 2,500 miles per year.

5. What sort of riding your bike is best suited to? What's the geometry designed for?
Normal commuting. Drum brakes, chainguard, dynamo lights. Hop on and go,

6. What would you change about your bike?
I'd like a Rohloff and a Dutch-style full chaincase.

7. Do you bike for fitness rides? Commuting? Joy rides? Do you drive or rely on your bike for everything?
Commuting. My car is for fun, my bike is for work.

8. Do you focus on any sort of specific excersises in accessory to cycling? How does it improve your performance?
Don/t care about performance. Bike is a tool for getting to work and back.

9. How often do you partake in long distance rides?

10. Do you perform your own maintenance?
When I have to.

11. How does cycling impact your nutrition?
I ride to lunch.

12. Is cycling more cardiovascular or muscular hypertrophy based, in your opinion?
Muscular, because my house is on a steep hill and there are only 7 gears.

13. Do you have more than one bike?
I've a hybrid as backup. No chainguard, rim brakes, so impractical.

14. How does cycling help you cope with stress, depression, etc?
Biking to work gives me confidence and drive. This helps me professionally.

15. Do you ride in the rain, cold weather?
Of course! They salt the roads here, so I am not going to take my car out.

16. How cycling friendly is the area where you live? Accessibility to paved trails? Gravel? Singletrack?
I can go most of the way to work on separated trails.

Must be because there's snow in the forecast for tonight. I can't decide whether to ride the bike, or get the snowblower ready!

I don't know why but screw it I will bite. I really should be doing laundry I keep putting it off. Ah well. Maybe tomorrow.

1. How old are you?
Much older than drippy but not that old

2. Fitness level on a scale of 1-10
3.1415926...

3. Cycling skill, 1-10
I can ride a bike decently but don't need to brag about anything I ain't some hot shiz I am tepid shiz at best.

4. Typical riding conditions?
usually there is weather.

5. What sort of riding your bike is best suited to? What's the geometry designed for?

Which one?

6. What would you change about your bike?

Not all of them are titanium or steel and I would also love to have a full NOS Dura Ace 7400 gruppo on the Phil Wood bike. Also wish I had more XT M-737 rear derailleurs so I could have put one on my touring bike (nothing wrong with the newer 9 speed XT RD but would have loved a barrel adjuster) Also wish I had more Di2 and maybe a longer travel fork on my Salsa. Beyond that I am pretty happy. I certainly wouldn't complain about bike geometry if I ran super long cranks and had pedal strike that is just ridiculous

7. Do you bike for fitness rides? Commuting? Joy rides? Do you drive or rely on your bike for everything?

Sure why not.

8. Do you focus on any sort of specific excersises in accessory to cycling? How does it improve your performance?

No

9. How often do you partake in long distance rides?

When I can so not often

10. Do you perform your own maintenance?

When I can if not I let one of my co-workers take a whack at it.

11. How does cycling impact your nutrition?

It doesn't

12. Is cycling more cardiovascular or muscular hypertrophy based, in your opinion?

Don't care

13. Do you have more than one bike?

Yes that is the number to have N+1 always unless the plus 1s are garbage bikes then I would get a decent bike and save up for N+1 over time.

14. How does cycling help you cope with stress, depression, etc?

It doesn't I am still depressed, certainly riding is fun but is not a cure for depression as the non-depressed love to tout. I love bikes but it doesn't change the fact I am depressed and cannot really change that as you can't just magically rid yourself of depression by just doing a fun activity. I can put a smile on my face and still be miserable.

15. Do you ride in the rain, cold weather?

Sure. Not a fan of mucky snow and slush though.

16. How cycling friendly is the area where you live? Accessibility to paved trails? Gravel? Singletrack?

It is fine it could be better but it could be a lot worse.

1. How old are you?
- 32
2. Fitness level on a scale of 1-10
- 6.5
3. Cycling skill, 1-10
- 6
4. Typical riding conditions?
- Mostly roads. Light gravel on rare, rare occasion. Usually rolling hills. Only cycle when it is dry, live outside LA. It is always dry! When I lived in Northern Australia I rode in the rain for like half the year.

5. What sort of riding your bike is best suited to? What's the geometry designed for?

- Road and light gravel. Relaxed and steady geometry.

6. What would you change about your bike?

- WHEELS!!!

7. Do you bike for fitness rides? Commuting? Joy rides? Do you drive or rely on your bike for everything?

- I was have been a commuter for several years of my life off and on. Currently for joy and fitness. I hope to try some adventuring and backpacking this summer.

8. Do you focus on any sort of specific excersises in accessory to cycling? How does it improve your performance?

- Yoga, core work, and basic weight lifting

9. How often do you partake in long distance rides?

- Working my way towards them. I want to try a gran fondo in the future.

10. Do you perform your own maintenance?

- as much as I can and still feel safe on the bike.

11. How does cycling impact your nutrition?

- positively. I am more in tune with what I eat and how I hydrate.

12. Is cycling more cardiovascular or muscular hypertrophy based, in your opinion?

- Cardio. With an American Football background and an ex-lineman at that, cycling is very much cardiovascular for me.

13. Do you have more than one bike?
- I am working on it!

14. How does cycling help you cope with stress, depression, etc?

A huge release and escape. Cycling helps me be fully present during my exercise time. I usually get lost in the sights, sounds, and feelings of being on the bike. The emotional and chemical boost after a good ride it tangible too. A week without a good ride and I feel myself get edgy and less pleasant.

15. Do you ride in the rain, cold weather?

Cold yes (if you can call 12C/53F cold). Rain, no.

16. How cycling friendly is the area where you live? Accessibility to paved trails? Gravel? Singletrack?

South Bay in the Los Angeles area is pretty good for cycling. The LA River, some nice areas, the strand along the beach. Not too much gravel near me, but other parts of LA have heaps.

Maybe this will help a new cyclist realize that there is lot more than their N=1 experience, and maybe will inspire them to actually learn rather than keep sharing each epiphany as though they've unlocked a deep mystery...

-----

1. How old are you?
- 40s

2. Fitness level on a scale of 1-10
- What's your measure? This is metrics based if you want it to be valid for anything of comparative value. My FTP is 304, with a w/kg of 3.9 which is meh, it used to be 4.5 but then I got older...VO2 Max is consistently estimated above 58 which is apparently pretty good, but a few years ago was tested at 62, so I guess that makes me a 6 or 7?

3. Cycling skill, 1-10
- What's your measure? I sometimes crash, and don't ride anything more technical than an occasional XC MTB track.

4. Typical riding conditions?
- Asphalt (new and broken), cement (new and broken), cobblestones, crushed limestone gravel, chunky gravel, muddy farm paths, grass, sand, singletrack (non-technical and/or XC MTB suitable)

5. What sort of riding your bike is best suited to? What's the geometry designed for?
- Which one? My bikes are well-suited to the surfaces I ride them on and in the way I choose to ride them.

6. What would you change about your bike?
- Which one?

7. Do you bike for fitness rides? Commuting? Joy rides? Do you drive or rely on your bike for everything?
- I don't own a car (my wife does...)

8. Do you focus on any sort of specific excersises in accessory to cycling? How does it improve your performance?
- Not really. Yoga and core work, could be more regular about it....I'm sure it'd promote added improvement.

9. How often do you partake in long distance rides?
- A lot...average 6 metric centuries most months, typically with 1 or 2 of those at minimum actually being imperial centuries

10. Do you perform your own maintenance?
- all of it, if I don't own the tool needed, I buy it

11. How does cycling impact your nutrition?
- I consume a lot of calories to fuel the engine

12. Is cycling more cardiovascular or muscular hypertrophy based, in your opinion?
- You're joking right?

13. Do you have more than one bike?
- Look left, I was once told by a colleague that I might have a problem. I don't see it.

14. How does cycling help you cope with stress, depression, etc?
- I won't get into it, but I wouldn't be emotionally healthy without it

15. Do you ride in the rain, cold weather?
- I ride nearly everyday (average 320 out of 365)

16. How cycling friendly is the area where you live? Accessibility to paved trails? Gravel? Singletrack?
- I live in Belgium.

1. How old are you?
- 30
2. Fitness level on a scale of 1-10
- 7? Hard to judge what are we judging by, is 10 pro? In which case I might be a 6, i.e. better than average (not hard if 1/3 of people are couch potatoes / overweight) but average for those taking sport serious.
3. Cycling skill, 1-10
- 6 (I assume skill as in bike handling)
4. Typical riding conditions?
- Absolutely no rain or darkness, though I realized when it is dry and light, I don't mind the cold.

- Roads in Switzerland are generally amazing.

5. What sort of riding your bike is best suited to? What's the geometry designed for?

- Endurance bike for a long time, recently an aero bike. It is cliche,

6. What would you change about your bike?

- I will upgrade wheelset next year. Deeper rims and even lighter (200-300g more off, on a wheelset this is nice)
- Would love to try tubeless but not sure about it

7. Do you bike for fitness rides? Commuting? Joy rides? Do you drive or rely on your bike for everything?

- Commuting in nice weather, otherwise for fun/fitness.

8. Do you focus on any sort of specific excersises in accessory to cycling? How does it improve your performance?

- I make my own training plans, quite close to polarized it ends up as. Though I like to do intervals and (short) climbs.
- I really need to do core work.

9. How often do you partake in long distance rides?

- I try to once a week.

10. Do you perform your own maintenance?

- Yes, though like once a year I have the bike checked in the LBS

11. How does cycling impact your nutrition?

- Not at all really, I try to eat well so I have as little weight as possible, but if I want to indulge I will, because I can.

12. Is cycling more cardiovascular or muscular hypertrophy based, in your opinion?

- Cardio for sure.

13. Do you have more than one bike?

- 1 city bike, 1 endurance, 1 aero

14. How does cycling help you cope with stress, depression, etc?

- Sport in general helps, and it makes me happy

15. Do you ride in the rain, cold weather?

- See above, only cold, not dark/wet

16. How cycling friendly is the area where you live? Accessibility to paved trails? Gravel? Singletrack?

- Switzerland is very cycle friendly, maybe not as much as the Netherlands in cities, but you can just take your bike and ride, many Landstrasse have cycle lanes or paths close to them for cyclists.

1. How old are you?
- 40

2. Fitness level on a scale of 1-10
- 6

3. Cycling skill, 1-10
- 2, if compared to someone like Danny MacAskill; 8 if compared to general population.

4. Typical riding conditions?
- Flat and windy. Asphalt of varying quality, gravel, fire roads, some XC singletrack.

5. What sort of riding your bike is best suited to? What's the geometry designed for?
- Commuting, touring

6. What would you change about your bike?
- Thinking about getting a shorter stem with some more negative angle, to get the handlebars a bit closer and lower.

7. Do you bike for fitness rides? Commuting? Joy rides? Do you drive or rely on your bike for everything?
- All three, but also drive for work related stuff, hauling bigger groceries, and also for fun.

8. Do you focus on any sort of specific excersises in accessory to cycling? How does it improve your performance?
- Not really, at least not on regular basis.

9. How often do you partake in long distance rides?
During non-winter I aim to do at least one 60+ km ride weekly, a metric century monthly, and an imperial century or more each year.

10. Do you perform your own maintenance?
- Yes. And not just my own.

11. How does cycling impact your nutrition?
- I get hungry during/after a ride.

12. Is cycling more cardiovascular or muscular hypertrophy based, in your opinion?
- Both, but really depends on the type of riding one does.

13. Do you have more than one bike?
- Not currently.

14. How does cycling help you cope with stress, depression, etc?
- I don't suffer from depression. It works well as a stress relief.

15. Do you ride in the rain, cold weather?
- Yes to both, albeit in the rain not by choice.

16. How cycling friendly is the area where you live? Accessibility to paved trails? Gravel? Singletrack?
- Not very friendly, but I'm not complaining. No paved trails, lots of gravel roads, no purpose-built singletrack.
