Oof, bummer. Guess I'll be pulling out that "Best of ZZ Top" LP today ... well, digitally, at least. Really glad my friend didn't like it and passed it along to me.

RIP. . Yeah, that's sad, but at least him, Billy and Frank put out a lot of good music. You've got to realize we'll all pass away someday. Even Keith Richards will die . . . . eventually.

And just performed a few days ago. Propped himself up to stand because of a hip injury. He's on the left.

I'm always surprised when any touring musician lives much beyond age 50. It's a grueling life with plenty of temptations to abuse the body.

But unlike many major touring acts, ZZ Top had an extremely protective manager in Bill Ham, who made sure to squeeze every possible coin out of tour promoters the record label, interviewers, etc., to benefit the band. And they seemed to value their privacy and time off between tours, so they didn't wear out their welcome or lose their mystique. Other than Billy Gibbons' occasional forays into acting and gigs with other bands, he seemed to be pretty health conscious, reportedly a vegetarian for years (not that I think that's an optimal diet for everyone, but it works for him). And the band members got along well but didn't pretend to be best friends or hang around each other off duty, which may have been a good thing for a long-term business relationship.

Looks like they were great showmen.
