Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Eddy Merckx - San Remo 76 - 2020 - (very) poor build quality?!

Hello all together!

Today i got my very first Carbon-Bike in my life and i was pretty annoyed how poor it was build and i refuse to belive that this is normal.

As you can see on the pictures, you can see a lot of cut open carbonfibres in the bottombracket area and also can see how poor it is build from the outside.

The hole for the front derailleur is barely big enough to get a shifting cable through it from the outside, from inside with inner-liner its a mission-impossible.

I planed to use a one-piece Hambini-Bottombracket, but with this frame in this state i not even trying to get it in.

I have also visible fibres in the steering-tube, but only a few, still not very nice in a Frame that lists MSRP for 2800€ !!!!

Furthermore the whole Frame is covered in small and larger Paint-defects, i have photographed a few of them.

What do you all think about all this? Do i overreact or is this all what i can expect for my money with carbon-frames?

Thank you all and best regards,
DuraAcer

Looks dodgy. Where did you buy it? Was there a San Remo 73 model? Did you mean 76?

You are right sir! It's a 76. Thank you.

I bought it brandnew by " probikeshop dot com " which is one of the official tour-de-france supplier and distributors for EM/Ridley Bikes.

Thank you and best regards,

You choose poorly grasshopper.

However the stuff is mostly cosmetic. If you can't return it for a refund acceptable to you, then just ride it, enjoy it and when the time comes... make a better choice.

So that rules out a fake. It does look like poor detailing. I would go back to the retailer and complain about the defects.

Ohhh maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!!!

I waited and searched for almost two years, lost 40 lbs and now i choosen the biggest toad that is around?

Thankfully i have paid it via Paypal so i am not worried about the refund, bc it is not as advertised & damaged even tho its mosly cosmetically.

I would return it for a full refund. Should be no problem as you haven’t even built it up. You don’t even need a reason to return it.

If they offer me a really great and reasonable discount i will think about it, otherwise it will go straight back where it came from.

That's a shame because I'm kinda digging that sparkle finish.

It looks nice on the pictures but the paint has defect all over the place, the longer i search, the more i could find.

I removed the Sticker on the silver Strip on the Top-Tube and there was also no Eddy Merckx Signature like on all other 2020 SR76's that you could find in Youtube Videos or on pictures.

My 30+ year old Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra have a much better overall finish than this sad piece of carbon.

Yeah that Olmo is a lovely piece of steel, but i prefer my fully build Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra SLX.

For me it would have to be a very significant discount. We buy bikes like this as a personal reward, so it doesn't make sense to live with something that annoys us. There are plenty of alternative frames around that don't have these annoying issues that greatly detract from any perception of quality. Even if they are only cosmetic. I can tell it would never be your pride and joy!

For example my Giant Defy is hardly what you would call exotic, but the paint and finish is much better than this. The finish and paint on my Canyon mtb is in another class too. So you can and should expect much better.

OP you have every right to call this frame out. Complete disaster. You have a 100% legitimate complaint here.

For that kind of money, I'd want a very nice finish. The frays in the inside of the layup wouldn't bother me much as they can be trimmed out.

I'm confident you can return it unless it was some sort of "no return" closeout. PBK is legit. I doubt they will negotiate with you for a discount, probably just send it back to their supplier.

I know it's no consolation for the paint defects, but very few carbon frames are pretty on the inside.

Yep, un-tooled carbon surfaces always look rough if you are unfamiliar.

Return the plastic/throw away "merckx" and ride the real Merckx from Meise Belgum.
