RIP pocket fisherman

Pioneering TV pitchman Ron Popeil dies at age 86

n 1959 he appeared in his first TV commercial, hawking the Ronco Chop-o-Matic food dicer. Debuting the earnestly dramatic style that became his trademark, Popeil said, "I'm going to show you the greatest kitchen appliance ever made."Popeil followed with a flurry of other made-for-TV inventions, dizzying in both their number and variety. They included the Pocket Fisherman, Mr. Microphone and the Electric Food Dehydrator. Popeil said he was not just a salesman, but also an inventor who designed many of the products himself.

How about the guy dancing with the radio? I don't think that would fly today.

Thanks, Ron Popeil, for your heroic nephew Irwin Mainway and his Bag O' Glass and Johnny Switchblade Adventure Punk.

And his offspring, Billy Mays and his OxiCoke Turbo Snorter.

Not to mention Vince Offer's SlapBite Weekend Girlfriend.

I remember that tv ad playing incessantly when I was a kid. Look at all the good times they were having! Pre-Internet. Pre-cell-phone. There's a whole lot of wrong in that ad, and the one that pops out the hardest at me is the segment with the person of color jammin' down the street with a boombox on his shoulder.

I studied Ron Popeil extensively for my marketing science degree. Fascinating man. I'm sure that Mike Lindell (My Pillow), and Phil Swift (Flex Seal) has taken many of their cues from Popeil's success.

I love it! We could actually start another Foo thread entitled "Nicknames", or something akin to that.
