2016 has been a very British year for me so far. (Dawes Galaxy content)

I started the year with a full overhaul of my 1980 Raleigh (Carlton) Super Course. Then I happened onto the '74 (I think) Falcon San Remo Model 80 (Pretty sure).

Then Monday I picked this up for $25.

The tube sticker is long gone, but it has all the hallmarks of a plain gauge 531 Galaxy. I have been (Somewhat) looking for just such a bike since I saw one in a Detroit bicycle shop in 2008.

Plan is period correct Suntour driveline, Nervar crankset, Weinmann concave rims laced to Normandy HF hubs, SR stem and Maes bend bars and Weinmann centerpulls. For right now I'm going to drop a Fujita "Belt" saddle on it until I can have a proper Brooks or Wrights saddle rebuilt, with an SR Laprade fluted seatpost to carry it.

This one is definitely getting a set of "shorty" fenders (Mudguards)

Nice, nice snag on the Dawes! Looks like mine but in yellow with a much different seat tube decal arrangement. Like yours, the 531 decal is mostly gone.

Will watch this build up.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you find it, and how do you plan to get the period correct parts? I've been wanting to start a project like this, but finding decent old parts sometimes seems to exceed the cost of new!

I found this frame at a semi-local co-op.

If you are just starting out, you are using the best resource right now, many of us here in C&V have been accumulating parts for years. I have been collecting for a decade now so I'm lucky enough to have the vast majority of what I am going to need to finish the Dawes.

Top tier parts are expensive, the more pedestrian (but still excellent) stuff like Suntour/SR etc is very affordable.

Ha, I am picking the Galaxy from an ebay seller local pickup tomorrow 2/6. It will help me overcome the sadness of what happened to a Peugeot frame in my hamfisted hands.

From the catalogs I perused, the shorty fenders are standard equipment. Debating upon barcons?

oddjob,

Looks like the same year bike!

Now I know what decal to put back on mine. I have a set of barcons, not sure I'll use them, I'm pretty comfortable with D/T's.

Wes, does yours come with the tab on the DT for shifters? I am going to stick with the Suntour barcons I have already. This Galaxy loves BC's.

Same 531 sticker here too. Just enough showing to find it in a cat. Have not gotten around to ordering. My seat tube has a copper colouured emblem with Latin on it instead of the Dawes decal. Which came first I wonder ?

Oddjob2 has got a real nice one to pick up, looks mostly complete and original.

Chuckk,

Nice machines!

3speed:

No tab on mine either, I'm tempted to braze one on, mine is going to need a re-spray, the damage to the paint is just to severe.

Let me throw a few pics of mine up when I can get to my shed. It will make your paint condition look pristine ! Seriously. Paint horrendous but chrome Devine!

I have no plans on painting mine though.

Tab would have stopped the downtube shifter from raking the paint in that spot. But BC are what has been on there now. I miss not having the old "bulb inside" Dawes bar ends on there anymore.

Waiting for the rain and slush to stop.

Great minds bike a like!

I'm still putting long alloy fenders on mine.

I have HF Normandy hubs for the wheel set now. Anybody can confirm which ones came original? Oddjob2 looks similar.

I built a wheelset, (Before I bought this frame) with Normandy HF hubs laced to Weinmann 27" concave rims. If I can correct the hop that the rear one has developed I'll be using them on the Dawes.

Definitely going with 70's specific accessories, shorty fenders are on the way thanks to Steve Whitlatch and I will likely toss on a Pletscher rear rack, add a Zafal HP and I will be riding like it was three years before I was born.

Hmmm, concave Weinmanns are not easy to find but I know where some are. Not cheap!

I have the Normandy hubs laced to Sun rims.
