Hi , new member here , am going to buy Dahon Mariner 8 , it will be used on an eleven mile one way trip from home to railway station over narrow winding secondary roads with about 3 miles of hilly sections in it. Will it be ok for this trip ? I am not too worried about speed . I would have gone for a Dahon Briza * with 24" wheels but its too big to fold for the train and bus journeys. Could owners of the Dahon Mariner please give me your thoughts ? I cannot afford a really expensive folder.

I have an older Dahon Mariner D7 and have done many such rides like what you described. You should be quite fine with the newer D8.

If it's really hilly and you don't have strong legs, you might want to consider using a smaller chainring to lower the gear range. Or think about adding a front derailleur adapter to use a double chainring crank.

Thanks tomtom , the hills come in short bursts with a rest between them so I guess I'll be ok , if not I will remember your suggestion

What was your decision?

Curious to see if/what you decided to buy.. I’m about to purchase a Mariner I think, going to test ride next week. Im not ready for $ for a Brompton until I try a folding bike..also have standard bikes at a family vacation house. I’m not a bike mechanic, so not intending to do upgrades myself. However I do have knowledgeable friends. I live in a city, have no ability to store a bike. I’m using it just for casual rides in/outside the city. What was you r decision and are you happy with it?

This is a bit of a necro thread at this point, but I wonder if people still think the Mariner is a better buy than the Link D8? The link costs $100 more but for that price you get: a higher-capacity rear rack, an adjustable stem to let you really dial in your fit, better frame geometry (this is probably very debateable), better latches, and double-walled rims on the stock wheels. In my eyes you get a lot of value for the extra money.

Ride both and pick the best one, My choice would only be my opinion and may not work for you. Roger
