If a motor on a bicycle offends you, go read another thread. Last year my wife and I built our tandem, starting with a custom Ti frameset. This year we got into BMX cruisers and a bit of racing. Next project? Choppers. They'll be pedal powered, but I'm sure at least one will end up with a petrol motor fitted into the frame. For the design we're using, we could even use an electric motor. Not quite the speed of my 400HP Camaro, but it will be a fun project. Some enthusiasts tinker with their bikes, and if they want to add a motor, I say go for it.

The Rabbitool motor is indeed super neat, but has been pretty elusive (vapour?). Birkestrand actually sold the rights to Sanyo who has been making the motors for a couple of years for the Japanese and European market.
Giant just released the SuedeE here in North America that uses that small Sanyo motor with a 36V, 9Ah NiMH battery. We've had a test bike in the shop for a few months and I'm pretty impressed: Good power (assist power, not motorcycle power), a neat Variable Power Control, and an understated kinda look.
What's really cool is that Giant is doing a (down-spec'd) version of this bike for the Mainland Chinese market and the economies of scale are gonna rock: This article talks about 250,000 electric bikes this year!

Point of self powered bikes
For you, a self powered bike may not make any sense, but for some, there are a variety of reasons. Yes, some may be lazy, but for others they may have physical limitations that prevent having a pedal only bike. I for one, love riding bikes and have friends who do as well who I used to ride with and am getting ready to join them again. However, I will be using a motorized bike due to disability.

Yes, some may be lazy, but for others they may have physical limitations that prevent having a pedal only bike. I for one, love riding bikes and have friends who do as well who I used to ride with and am getting ready to join them again. However, I will be using a motorized bike due to disability.

"E bikes" with throttles - i.e. that can be ridden without pedaling - are motorcycles, pure and simple but are considered "bicycles" just because they aren't noisy and smelly.
I'm even more dismayed that they and 20 mph "limited" pedal assist ebikes are taking over MUPs. They're obnoxious and unsafe for real pedal cyclists and pedestrians alike. I mean, it's actually a very rare pedal-only cyclist who can even ride 15-20mph for sustained times. I'm not saying that none can do it, there's plenty of fit people on these boards who do. But very few on an MUP, let alone one who's a big enough jerk to ride 15-20 mph on a MUP. I see it all the time nowadays, duffers riding 15-20mph ebikes on MUPs. Stupid local regs are being passed to allow this speed with ebikes and still be considered a "bicycle" for application of laws such as non-motorized use of MUPs etc. Plus lack of enforcement of the poor regs that are in effect.
I have no problem with ebikes in general: pedal assist limited to normal human speeds. For many of the folks riding them, that would be 8-10mph, 12 or 15 at the most.

The old neck doesn't rotate as much or as quickly as it used to either.
I do have a mirror, but when they are doing 3X my speed, OBJECTS APPEAR! I might have to veer around broken glass/trash etc. as they try to whiz by. They catch the end of the left bar, turn me into the curb and I'm probably going to have a broken "something" on my body.
