Garmin Connect App “Insights” area

Anyone using the Connect App with their Garmin ever perused the Insights area? I did tonight for the first time and can’t believe what it is telling me.

Under the Cycling sub-category it is telling me my average:
- speed is faster than 90% of all users.
- weekly distance is 91% farther than all users
- duration is 98% greater…blah blah.

I would consider most people who take the plunge into cycling computers and analysis are generally pretty into their sport and dedicate a fair amount of time to it. At least the people I know do and are far stronger and faster. I like stats and seeing progress but I find this unbelievable.

Caveat: I realize others don’t have computers and could care less about stats and that is just fine under “different strokes”, so consider your antipathy toward computers already noted.

I have a Garmin 530 and use it to track my fitness. I have never turned on Insights, but did after your post. I'm not necessarily concerned with my performance as compared to others, but I would consider my fitness level to be far above others in my age group (67). Again, as far as some of those metrics go i.e. "faster than all users" it really doesn't matter to me. But anecdotally I would say I'm in the top 5-10% as far as general and overall fitness goes for my age group.

I have a Fenix 5X and I think Garmin, in general, tries to set up their apps to puff-up their customers. I see this in Connect with all of the (participation) "Trophies" I get. I'm 64 and in pretty good shape but I'm no super cyclist by any stretch. The trophies mean nothing to me and quite frankly I don't ever look at them unless I'm cruising the Web version for some historical data. For historical data I mostly rely on VeloViewer though, which is actually pretty useful plugin.

I check it out about weekly. It shows I am a little above average in speed relative to other duffers my age, but significantly above average in distance and duration. That sounds about right from what I can see, but the figures do not drive me.

From what I see, these figures default your age group, not to that of all users. You can select other age groups, but I don't see an option for all age groups.

I don't think it's comparing us only with people that have bike computers. It's comparing us with the whole Garmin ecosystem.

I personally don't put the effort to upload/sync ride data.

This would be great if frequently ran across other locals that shared the same interests as I do in riding, let alone personal capabilities with average MPH & seasonal distance achieved.

How about an anti-brag?

I'm looking at the Garmin "Insights" section right now.

This "Max Avg Power" stat, which I assume is average power for an entire ride (and requires a power meter), is crushing:

At the 13th percentile? Seriously?

Ouch!

See what I mean? I am sure you are crushing it in all other categories. Maybe it’s good I don’t use a power meter, just heart rate. If it makes you feel any better, my Zwift calculated FTP is 228.

Just remind yourself that all the other stats are based on everyone that has a Garmin device that reports to Garmin Connect. Power is only from those that care to pay extra for a power meter and are likely to be those that are more of a adrenalin junkie than us lesser people that have a PM.

Since it's a narrower group of people the amateur competitive cyclists and pro cyclist might even make up a large part of the group where as in the overall group of everyone, they don't make as much a dent in the curve.

Not much better. Garmin says my recent FTP was 167 (2.75 W/kg).

I accept and appreciate that rationalization.
