San Diego HI Christmas Bike Ride: no more?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

San Diego HI Christmas Bike Ride: no more?

Hello all! Just got back from a small organized ride in IL/IN/MI, and I was really talking up the annual Hosteling International Christmas Ride that starts on Dec 26 and ends on Dec 31 in San Diego, goes through the desert, past Salton Sea, into Palm Desert, up through Hemet to Fallbrook, and then all the way down the coast back to Sunny SD. I did the ride in 2005 and 2010. Was hoping to do it again this year and bring along some more riders, but can't find any information about it. Does this ride still happen, or is it... over?

(Some reason I can't reply quoting your comment because it has a link in it, idk, but thank you!)

That is a weird old link. The only date I could find on it was from July 2011.

it’s very strange it has no year. And there is very little detail.

It’s also strange the price has hasn’t gone up.

The Loma Point hostel isn’t listed in the parent organization’s website.

They stopped it in about 2015. (I did it 3 times starting in 2012.)

The particular hostel that ran that event doesn’t exist any more.

According what appears the be their Facebook page, the hostel closed in March, 2021.

Yeah, I looked for a date but once I saw there was contact info my work was done. I tried.

It’s reasonably likely the OP tried as well. That could be taken as a hint to look more closely at stuff one comes across.

There are a bunch of things that are off about that site. The URL was a big thing that didn’t look right. It seems it was/is a place where people could create free websites.

HIUSA (the parent organization) has had a dedicated website for years.

I knew they shut down the ride (in 2015 or 2016, about).

Didn’t know they shut down the hostel. Unfortunate, because it was a nice place.

You could always credit card tour it....
pending on the rain season we have this yr, the mts and desert will be COLD. Chances of snow and Ice getting over Palomar are good chance and desert is in the 20's in the early morning.

Thanks, all. Yep, looks like a no-go. But yeah, could definitely do it independently. :-(

I can attest to that.

We used to operate a tour around New Year's Day in San Diego area. We sometimes encountered brutal winds in and around Borrego Springs. We rode to and stayed in Julian, also, and one year we encountered snow on the ground. But when the weather was good, it made for a really nice trip.
