A whopping 7 miles around the neighborhood on my gravel bike......after putting out 55 bales of pine straw around the house.

Sunday Dec 6th, Metric Centure and More

Greetings all.

So four of us decided we would ride our age today. Three are 75 and one 73. Plan was to go from South of Miami to Miami Beach and back -- adding some loops here and there to get the miles.

Two dropped out at about 50 which was a lot for them. Friend and I held out as he did 74 and I 77 (we are 73 and 75). My 77 was the longest ride since 2015!!! Broken thigh/hip bone in 2017 slowed me down a bit since then.

No we didn't go super fast averaging about 14.3. Spent over five hours in saddle with two long rests. That makes it at 6,950 miles so far in 2020-- the most I rode since 2016 when did 6,400.

I was never more than 5 miles from the house but I rode 25 miles exploring some different places on my gravel bike. I even rode about 1/2 mile of dirt!

I rode the new portion of the Hector Henry greenway along the Rocky River. There were some long stretches of wooden walkways in the marshy low lying areas. I sure hope the walkways will be able to withstand the constant flooding from the river.

It sure seemed to get colder the longer I rode as the sun never made an appearance all day.

This is probably total heresy, but I ride my “endurance” bike on trails almost regularly. (Don’t tell GlennR). Yes I ride on pavement more, but dirt doesn’t stop me. The geometry and tubeless tires make it very comfortable on dirt so have no reservations.

No ride today..COVID test for a week long very stuffy nose and fatigue.

32.64 miles today. Every ride in December I figure this will be the last one. One of these days the snow is going to hit the fan. But until then...

We got in a nice 17 mile RT "lunch ride" over to Cottonwood Regional Park to have a brown bag lunch and get in trails with uphill grades as we are both "rehabing" from left knee strains! We switched from riding recumbent trikes for the last 2 years to "crank forward-flat foot tech", bicycles and these 65 year old bodies aren't liking the switch but are getting use to as we ride the "bikes" more and more! Wanted to see how well we'd do riding a constant changing uphill grades trail and LOL, be able to take it easy on the way back! 55+ F, sunny with just a lite breeze a fine Dec. day in So. CO.

Restroom break along the path.

One of the few flat sections of the path

Well, the weather was so wonderful today my 32 mile ride became 82 miles. Just a perfect day to be riding around coastal NC. It was the perfect venue to reflect on losing a good cycling friend to cancer last week and the all roads we’d ridden together. Dan Coughlin had many interests including hunting with his dogs. About 25 miles into the ride I passed a young fella hunting with a bunch of dogs in the back of his pickup. Was it a coincidence??? I just had to stop and the young man was very gracious to talk to a stranger in cycling clothing about his dogs and the hunt. He even said it was okay to take a photo of his dogs and you might be able to see 7-8 happy and eager Foxhounds inside the dog cage. I think Dan would have approved!!

It was a cold one this morning. But I did run into some Tesla filming with a chase car. The cam car was actually on my side when I spotted them.

No. To be honest I got the wheel from a friend and left the existing cog on there and it lowered the gearing of my bike a tooth or two. I need to put my other cog on there so I don't spin out so easily. No walking at all, not even close. Also bear in mind I've recently lost 40 pounds so I have a lot more reserve than I used to. And... I live at the top of a hill so I'm used to dragging my sorry ass up them when I'm tired. Nothing much over 5% so not too bad.

I think I'm due for some new stickers. I haven't put any new ones on in a while.

My ride started 4:30AM this morning at 49 degrees and ended after a slow 32 miles at 45 degrees. Although slow and not very long, the ride was a record setting 5th day in a row on my bike.

A nice 42 mile gravel ride on a cool day. I’ve ridden this route a lot and the gravel roads were as smooth and fast as I’ve seen. There’s about 3100’ of climbing so it’s not flat. I’ve changed my crank from a 46/34 to a 46/30 and I love the 30. I can now spin up the steeper stuff. There’s an Amish store half way and I always enjoy using it as a lunch stop.

A “Cousins Ride”!!!

My cousin Vance took me on some of his old training roads north of Gaffney, SC. A really nice mix of 50+ miles of gravel and asphalt......plus a few creek crossings. We even rode the loop through the Cowpens National Park where Vance did his TT training when he was riding with the Pro teams. We talked about the first time I saw him riding......he was finishing with the leaders with a banged up knee climbing Grandfather Mountain on the 102 mile Bridge to Bridge ride.

There was so little traffic we rode side by side and got caught up on all the family stuff. Vance can still really spin those wheels!! You wouldn’t even know we’re first cousins seeing how well he rides!

The only thing missing was my cyclist brother who was keeping the business going back in Gastonia.

Old dam and water wheel

Cousins selfie

Dry feet!

Don’t laugh!! How you cross streams when you don’t have technical bike skills!!

My former employers electric generation facility.

Checking to see if Andie Macdowell is home!!!

Merry Christmas!

I think this probably was my last ride. Today's forecast calls for 4-6 inches of snow and temps in the tens and teens after. It was a great season!

Did I ride today? Should have, it was 50*. Instead spent 5 hours pruning back perennials in one garden area and still have a couple more hours to finish it. Then I have about 40 hours pruning back the other gardens, done 3-4 hours at a time lest I go crazy. My wife and I used to maintain our over gardened acre together, but with her medical conditions, I do it all and it is a real time suck. Your standard gardener for hire wouldn’t have a clue or want to work here.

Will try to squeeze in some riding between storms and freezing temps.

Just returned from Sacramento area after a week and enjoyed several days of cycling back roads in the foothills with sunny skies and temps in the high 40s and low 50s. It was heaven.

December Video Footage

I managed to shoot some footage from a recent ride along an unmaintained forest trail in my home town. The ground conditions were extremely rough that day riddled with hard packed craters and sections of icy washboard. Full credit goes out to my studded Gravdal tires.
