I've been wanting to do this for years.... and I have an extra frameset that likely has had a front end impact. Someday I'll get around to it.

They were brazing them that way for a long time, I have a New World, from just before WWII and it is fillet brazed.
if only Schwinn in the early 70’s had gone to oversized down and seat tubes

Fillet, fill it, Phil it - I’ve had my fill, aye.
It looks real purdy but from what I have read on the interwebz, clear coating it is a bad idea. I won’t be keeping this bike and the guy getting it, like many people, doesn’t give a toss about the craftsmanship.

I think the top tube was oversized. the seattube accepted a typical front derailleur, the other two tubes is where it ould have done the most good.
Most likely use oversized on the top tube to reduce set ups and raise volume for best purchasing prices.

Looks like the OP's is a 32-gallon Blue Hawk, likely from Lowe's; I've had mixed results with these. Early ones held up well, later models crack readily.

FYI, I have a free frame for anyone near Toledo Ohio. A 72 Super sport that I stripped ALL the parts off of for my other 3 Super sports. It is the smaller size they may call a 21 or 22”. Posted it on the sales section long ago. Not pretty and will need paint, but a project for anyone interested.

I measured the tubes on my '66 Super Sport as follows:
Top Tube 1.000"
Down Tube 1.125"
Seat Tube 1.160"
You have to careful when replacing the front derailleur on these because of the slightly oversize seat tube.
I replaced mine with a Campagnolo but had to file it out so the clamp wouldn't snap.

I'm interested! I live in Niles, Michigan just north of the Indiana Toll Rd and Notre Dame U. I have a good friend that is a UPS long haul truck driver. He does the run from South Bend to Toledo 4 or 5 times a week. He is wanting to learn how to professionally paint and your frame would be a great project. I love Super Sports and would prefer working on one of them than some random frame as a learning tool.

Life is funny Doug. I work at that UPS facility and perhaps have even seem/met/talked to him without knowing. I was in packages for 25 years, and a yard shifter of trailers for 8 where I saw many of the drivers. I now have made it all the way to the top as a janitor/porter. I now see many of these drivers while I am out in the lot picking up trash. It would be really coincidental if his run takes him there while I am working. We will have to get in touch. This is the smaller frame, and I stripped everything off, but still have some parts left FYI.
Super Sports were measured center to top in inches. Because the seat tube sticks up well beyond the top of the top tube, a 22" SS is roughly the same as a 21"lugged frame.

I'm thinking that the head tube ID on these frames is also perhaps a bit oversized, so special/specific headset needed iir.
