That was the symptom. Caused by blood squirting into the inside my eyeball. The bleed is a 'common' issue with old folks. As the eye ages, the vitreous dries and shrinks. If it sticks to the retina, it can cause a tear (rip) as it slowly pulls away. The 'ink' is from blood blocking light to the retina. It dispersed, but that meant the vitreous was full of dissolved blood and was no longer clear. I had the tear cauterized by laser, but I'm left with a bunch of floaters - blood clumps floating around inside. They're supposed to go away eventually. For now, there's one obnoxious J-shaped one that likes to float right in the middle of my vision. Since it's my dominant eye, reading is an effort, especially if the print is small.

I woke up one morning and it seemed that I was looking through a dark smudge. By noon, I could no longer see out of that eye. Quick trip to the eye doctor diagnosed it as a retinal hemorrhage. Some will stop bleeding and clear up on their own but this one was bad enough that I had to have a vitrectomy. Check that operation out on youtube. 
Anyway, a retinal hemorrhage is not a tear but burst capillaries that are superfluous and can be caused by high blood pressure and a whole myriad of other issues.

My retinas are monitored by a retinal- vitreous specialist because of lattice degeneration, which can result in a torn retina. One of the things the doctor told me is not to lift very heavy objects or exert my self to the limit. Exercise is fine, but exhaustion or extreme exertion could provoke a detachment.

My granma said "any day you can get out of bed is a good day" and I fully believe that. Whether I get up hobbling, limping, or groaning, it's still a good day. And the aches and pains disappear when I ride. I only worry about the day I won't be able to get up...
