In the last couple of years I’ve had two 531-tubed Raleighs that came to me with seat lugs crimped in from too-small seat posts and corrosion. I would suggest running a brake cylinder hone on an electric drill in the seat tube to clean the corrosion out. Take the bottom bracket out first! Once that’s done try a 27.2 post with lots of grease - you might be home free then.

I know they made a few higher level models, a couple of which have popped up on this forum this week, but I feel like Takara isn't a brand that anyone would take care to maintain in a pristine state or (apart from a challenge like this) restore. That's one of the things I love about this challenge. It gives a bunch of us motivation to show some love to bikes that might otherwise have been neglected, like your Cannondale.

I'm impressed! I like the blue very much it really looks right for the time, the silver bands go good with the chrome. The fork crown detail is the same that I put on my Gitane TdF. 26.5 pounds that's a light weight of the time, or that's what they told us bitd.
Diacomp "G", those are the best brakes that almost work and imo one of the best looking ever made, they always bling. I have the short reach recessed nut version on a bike, rare beasts they are.
Diacomp "G", those are the best brakes that almost work and imo one of the best looking ever made, they always bling. I have the short reach recessed nut version on a bike, rare beasts they are.
My build is now complete!
Final budget:
Initial bike investment: $0
Paint: $7.50 (half a can of primer and a can of color)
Decals: $9
Chain: $9
Tires: $32!! (had to order new ones, but I was able to get free shipping)
Dropout screws: $1
Cable guides: $3
Freehwheel $20 (SunTour Perfect that I got along with shifters and derailleurs from a BF member a few years ago)
Cables $10 (bulk housing and cables, informed guess at proportional cost)
Total: $91.50
As shown below, the bike weighs 26.5 pounds. The rear wheel alone weighs about 5.5 pounds. But it looks really nice, right?
The front brake gave me a bit of a scare during the rebuild. I may have mentioned previously the the upper cable attachment arm was a bit bent. I removed the bolted on cable stop so I could put it in the bench vise to bend the arm back. When I was reattaching the arm, the bolt snapped off. Luckily, I have a similar Dia Compe brake that I use for spare parts. I bought it for about $5 three or four years ago for the chamfered brake pad washers, which matched an old Campy Nuovo Record brake that was missing the washers. This is now the fourth time I've pulled something off that brake to fix or complete another brake. The "GX" bit in the picture above is what was donated this time around.
I feel like there's a legitimate possibility that this might be the nicest Takara in the world right now. I can't wait to get out and ride it. Unfortunately, the forecast calls for rain for the next few days, and I'm leaving next weekend for three weeks in Maryland, so I won't get a lot of time to ride it until July.

I got it on Amazon. If you search for “chrome tape” it should show you several options. I got it a couple of years ago, so I have no idea which option I bought.

That really does look just like the fork on the Takara, except your chrome is polished. The Takara's is a bit rough.

Deal too good to be true
What a deal. I’m jealous. I think we should institute a new rule for entry to the 100 clunker challenge, all entrants must be willing to sell their entries for let’s say $200 (allows for $100 worth of labor).

Interesting idea. Like the "claim" auto races BITD. Maybe next time 'round.

Ask @Narhay, a few years back, rule was your Clunker could be bought for $100, don't think it was mentioned this year though. Don
edit: Looked back thru a few and don't see it mentioned, maybe I misremembered it. Getting old.

Fini!
I was out at 5:35 this morning on the Cannondale, cranking out the laps and winding up with 10.25 miles and hitting 109.4 km total over the last eight days. Unlike some clunkers, I think I may want to hang on to this one, as it's my only non-ferrous frame AND it has the potential to become my long-threatened cycle-camping bike. I will be looking around for the correct fork for it, though - there is no way I can get a fender under that unicrown with anything bigger than a 25. It's actually a bike well worth the creeping upgrade path we all know and love so well.
And how, pray tell, does one celebrate completion of the Clunker Challenge 100?
By buying another clunker -
While standing at the stove waiting for something to finish boiling I glanced at FB Marketplace on my phone, saw the first pic, and without even thinking about it messaged the seller to see if it was still available. It was. I will go pick it up later this morning - a 1988 Centurion LeMans in my size for $35? Oh, baby, that has Clunker Challenge all but painted on the top tube in funky squiggly '80s font! The burning question is - do I attempt to do it in the remaining time this year, just under two months to the deadline, or do I mothball it for next year?
We all know what will happen. I'll get it into my shop, I'll stand there looking at it ... and all of a damn sudden I'll be standing there with a wrench in my hand and greasy dirt all over my fingers. I know it, you know it, Bob Dole knows it, and the American people know it.

That's a fine Clunker candidate. I was always impressed by the build and paint quality of every Centurion passing through my hands, but beholding those pics, all I can say is Eeewwwww! Nowhere to go but up and looking forward to see how nice she looks after being in your care for a while. Don

Yours actually looks pretty clean! Might be the pain hides the grime?

if you rode that through the piedmont fields of upstate S.C. as is, you should win every Clunker award and sub award...

I saw go for a Double Clunker -- ride it 100k as is, then clean it and ride it another 100k.

[QUOTE=hazetguy;22093119]dang, that is some sweet filth!
i double dog dare you to do The Challenge with no cleaning or maintenance (replacing safety stuff like tires and tubes is ok with me, obviously).

While I haven't ruled that out, the BB feels like it's full of glue and the chain needs attention. It may be simply unrideable in its current state.

1. That fuzz everywhere could be the result of a hit and run with some unidentified mammal...check cold cases in your area.
2. That chainstay protector is AWESOME! That will shine right up!
3. Check the head-tube for termite damage, and the bearing areas for killer wasps, palmetto bugs and endangered fungi colonies...
4. Do not lift the bike from the underside of the seat...there could be a wasp nest underneath (ask me how I know)
5. Operational safety equipment takes second seat to bragging rights...
