I want one of these, but I don't know if I want this one. It's a long way away and seems like the asking price is a couple hundred too high, based on condition. I see prices for these all over the place, but seller's asking price is pretty much the top. I'd probably want to offer something under $600. What do you folks say? What's a fair price for this one?

I remember finding one of these several years back and mentally wrestling with the $400 price tag. Never did buy it and quickly moved on.
I think your instincts are closer to reality than the seller’s asking price. Needs all new wear items. Then again, the frame looks nice and it may be a long time before you find another in this size. If I really wanted it, I’d try to get the seller to take $150-$200 off to offset the cost of new, higher-end wear items.

...that whole "light surface rust from storage" business can really bite you in the ass if the chrome is compromised.
I am just now finishing up one of these as a project bike, and I'm not sure I could sell it for that price, even with everything fixed and new.
With an original asking price that high for what the seller knows is a project bike, I would just keep on walking. Those guys never come down to earth.
