How much $$ to update from a 2x9 to a 1x11?
bought a NOS 2018 Kona Rove DL and i'd really like a 1x11 as opposed to the 2x9 that it came with.
that said, i wouldn't be able to do the work myself so i imagine it'd be quite costly to make this update, correct?
has anyone done similar care to weigh in?
thx.

Check to see of the wheels will accept n 11 speed cassette. Else it's a moot point on that wheel, unless you can get a local shop to swap to an 11spd compatible hub.
Edit: Then you need somebodies 1X crank with what is known as a “narrow/wide” chainring, plus bottom bracket. Then an 11 spd. rear shifter, 11 spd. cassette and chain.

Assuming you are paying full retail, given the current bicycling market, I'd say about $600 for the shifters, derailer, cassette, chain and crankset plus $100+ in labour

A few years ago I swapped a 105 2x10sp setup for a SRAM Force 1x11 on an old CX bike. For that project, I needed:
EDIT: The only snag I ran into was learning that chain ring bolts come in different lengths. The ones I bought were too long (for a double chain ring) and so I had to buy shorter ones designed for a single chain ring.
- 11sp shifters/brake levers (you can use 2x11 shifters, but the 1x versions remove the shifting components from the left side, so I guess they save a little weight? They're cheaper)
- 11sp 1x rear derailleur
- 11sp cassette
- 11sp chain
- 110bcd narrow/wide chain ring
- single chain ring bolts (they're shorter than the 2x bolts)
- new brake and shifter cables/housing
- New bar tape (you could probably reuse old, but this is a good time to replace)

Cheaper and easier is 1x10. Won’t need new shifters or wheels, would just need a 9 Mtb speed derailleur. I run 8/9 speed Deore with 10 speed 105 upfront.
Other derailleur work, but if they don’t have a barrel adjuster you need to add one to the housing near the stem. You could add a derailleur extender to get up to 40t if derailleur capacity is lower.
There are 9 speed long cage, Shimano Altus for example can go up to 40t.
Or get a 10 speed road and add a roadlink, should be able to do 40t in back with that.
Narrow wide is advisable but not essential. I don’t use one on my cx 1x10 setup and have no issues with dropped chains riding single track. Just make sure the chain is the right length. Narrow wide with a clutch derailleur is overkill but nice, my mtb is setup that way. Clutch on its own is supposed to remove the need for narrow wide.

+1 on 1x10 being easier. STI is expensive.
If you want clutch, you can use a wolf tooth tanpan. Clutch with Shimano starts at 10sp, and 11sp MTB derailleurs work with 10sp cassettes and shifters.
If you don't need clutch, a 9 sp MTB derailleur will wrap larger cogs.

You don't need a new wheel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You just need to run a shimano 11-34 or wider range 11 speed cassette. The 11-32 and narrower 11 speed cassettes are the ones that require a wider freehub body.

1x11 on a budget with hydro upgrade.
Shimano RS505 shifters with flat mount calipers - $170
Shimano GRX812 rear derailleur - $110
Shimano GRX-RX600 crank - $140
Shimano Deore XT 11-42 cassette - $60
Total - $480
Now that is assuming you are paying full retail for the GRX bits which most places will have a 15-20% coupon so it can be cheaper.
2x9 is still HG so you can use an 11sp MTB cassette no problem.

$80 MSRP vs $140 for a GRX-RX600 crank.
