1981 Miyata 710 with 700x38 tires?
A 1981 Miyata 710 is available locally. I need another bike project like a...(insert gruesome trope), but I do have a set of of 700x38mm gravel kings collecting dust, and the 710 is a 27' Sporty Sports Tourer with fender mounts. Any chance the 700x38's will fit? The other consideration is that I have an 1982 Miyata 610 that gets pushed farther back in the garage every time I bring another bike home. The 610 is going to remain a 27" bike but it looks very similar to the 710 on paper and there is going to be a massive herd cull at some point, so I shouldn't be buying more bikes just "on principle" Thoughts? Thanks, Woody

You could probably make 700x38's work on the 610, provided you are not married to having 27" tires on it and have brakes with long enough reach for 700c rims.
I was able to fit 700x38 Soma Shikoros on my 1000 with a little room to spare*, and without slamming the axle back in the dropout; I ended up spec'ing GravelKing 700x35's and they fit beautifully.
* - There was enough room that I would have been comfortable on dry and relatively clean surfaces; mud and large debris (bits of branches, etc.) might have been problematic.

Ming Brown. The 118 bcd crankset is not a selling point for me. The bikes been sitting for 20+ years and the seller is of the "these things go for $400 so I'm selling this for $150" mindset, I'll problem have to make an offer and then we roll the dice weather someone wants it more or I come back for it.

Its definitely one of those "hard tell'n not know'n " questions. I'll be bringing calipers and checking clearances. If its true love all over again, I'll rationalize as needed.

Listing states that bike has a 23" top tube. It looks big for a 23" frame, but its hard to tell from the picture.

This might not really help but I put Donnelly MSO's 36 on my Miyata 1000. I was able to put on 38s BUT no margin for error, ie blown spoke, mud etc. The 36's are rolling nicely. I do have an '84 Trek 720 that have 27" wheels. I plan to swap wheels with the Miyata and see what I can do.
FWIW: 36's are decent size tire for hardpack gravel with some lose 1-2"stuff. Not really wide enough for baby heads. Doable, not comfy

If the geometry is anything like my 1985 310, and I believe the 310 and 710 were the same, I could barely fit 27x1 1/4. Yeah the switch to 700c will help but highly unlikely that you’ll fit 38s.
I briefly had a 615 (later version of the 610) and easily fit 27x1 1/4 with fenders.

So, did this bike become part of your “herd”? I know what you’re saying RE: needing another bike (my “gruesome trope” would be -like I need a hole in my head-). RE: the bike in question, IMO, there are bikes better suited to a “gravel conversion”. I have an ‘84 SevenTen and that year’s catalog does not list it as any type of “tourer”. By 1984, the SevenTen came with 700c wheelsets (& 700c x 20 tires). I’d be able to mount 25s but larger might be an issue. I will say tho, I’ve never considered it. I have other bikes for gravel riding. RE: the seller’s asking price, initially, $150 seemed high (mine was $50 but that was a while back ;-)) but with the current situation, $150 might be reasonable. My reason for going ahead with the purchase would have solely been based on getting another Miyata into the “herd” but since I already have a SevenTen, the Fun Police would have questioned that action. We all want to know how this situation shakes out!

I took a quick look at the bike and it looked well maintained, but ended up being a 25" frame. The guy I talked to is selling it for his father, and I get the feeling that the father was or is a bike guy/curmudgeon. So the measurements I got through the son were a 23" top tube apparently, because that's the one that matters. and when I did get a reported measurement for the seat tube it was 24" which would be the center to center measurement.
I didn't give it a thorough check, as I wasn't going to buy it, but I did get a 36mm-ish measurement at the chain stays, So it looks like the bike might take 28-30mm tires.
Here's the listing: Miyata 710

Thanks for the update. Ya, those measurements reported early in the thread seemed peculiar. The MarkePlace pic sure looks more like a 25” frame. The dad must be a pretty tall, lanky guy based on the amount of of seat post and stem quill showing.
In addition to ensuring adequate clearance side to side, wider tires can also add to a wheel’s radius. I’ve put larger (than designed for) tires on a bike with “racing” geometry and found it quite difficult to get the wheel forward enough to allow the axle to slip into the (horizontal) drop outs! I had to let some air out of the tire then pump it back up!
Hopefully, someone else will be able to enjoy that bike.

The 710 will fit a 30mm tire (actual width inflated) but I have been running 28mm Continental 4 Seasons for many years.
For those who think the Pro is the same geometry it is not...it will only fit a 25mm...I run Gatorskins.
The 710 is setup as a 2x9 hill climber with a 46/30 FSA crankset and an 11-34 cassette and a Deore rear mech...everything else is Shimano 105...it's still a very relevant member of my herd...

A tenuis connection, but I was just staring at a Miyata 712 frame I found at the scrap yard, I haven't checked the clearances yet, but 28mm might be to much. This bike has the internal brake cable in the top tube. No cracks that I can see. The paint is kind of rough so, it wouldn't be to much of a stretch to add port gussets before an inevitable powder coat. It has fender mounts so it is making its way to the 650b someday pile for now.

710 & 712 have race geometries, if you have a 610, mount those fatties on it

I commuted on a newer Seven Ten 20 years ago. It was a tight fit with 25's and fenders. Without fenders I could just barely fit 28's and never rode it that way. Don
