I've never done a haiku before but had a puncture at this exact spot and thought I'd take the opportunity to give it a go....

Streets strewn with broken glass brings rides to a temporary stop
You'll see so much more if you pause, look around and up
And what was half empty becomes a now half full cup

Thanks and yes I didn't get the 575 thing right there did I. And I know they mostly don't rhyme, but they please my simple mind more when they do. OK I'll have another bash.....

Concrete jungle more grey than green
Yearning for countryside scenes with burbling streams
Painted jungle can still be serene

Aha! I see what we’re missing: it’s syllable-count, not word-count that makes Haiku unique. But still lovely poems and photos.

Merriam Webster's definition of haiku: An unrhymed verse form of Japanese origin having three lines containing usually five, seven, and five syllables respectively.

I actually learned about haiku from a girlfriend, while I was stationed in Iwakuni, Japan. Not poetry as we understand it, it is more contemplative; something to meditate on. The discipline of staying with the pattern causes you to expand your vocabulary, to find words that fit both the definition you are looking for, and the syllable count you need to complete the puzzle. I find it nice to practice on long solo rides.

Odd, every other source I find defines haiku as poetry - I certainly would define it as such. To me, poetry is the concentration or better yet distillation of words to paint images in the mind. I would agree that haiku is like a puzzle.

Of interest, haiku was created out of renga, a collaborative poetry session - it was the first stanza. We are far from the conventions of renga, but this collaborative group effort seems to be in the spirit of renga.

Not my call. Kurt's work and attention to detail is amazing when restoring old English roadsters and rod brake bikes. The cover on this saddle from the mid '50s is way beyond its life expectancy. I'm just volunteering my leather crafting skills to one of his projects. We want to see if I can faithfully reproduce an appropriate replacement.
