Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I just use Garmin Connect on my phone to pull the data from my Garmin watch and bike computer.

It shows everything I care about.

I don’t use “social” sites, e.g. Strava.

I do Strava, but it's private. Only I can see my results.

While on the bike I just have my computer going. I have Strava aggregate everything since I have both Garmin and Wahoo head units (plus Zwift).

intervals.icu for tracking progress. Xert for generating workouts when I'm riding indoors.

On the bike it's my Edge 530. After the ride I use the RideWithGPS website via my browser on my PC or Macbook.

I'm not a fan of looking at apps on a phone if that's what you meant by apps. I like to see lots of info at once and open several pages of previous rides to see them side by side to make comparisons. Sort of hard to do on a phone, even the big phones that barely fit in a pocket.

90% of my ride nothing but a Cateye measuring mph, miles and time.

10% Garmin Connect. If the ride incorporates a lot of ascent, I will map it using ridewithgps to get an accurate idea of elevation gain.

I use Ride/w/GPS on an iPhone. Before that I used Cyclemeter. On the bike, I have ye olde Cateye for distance and cadence, but RwGPS aggregates al the data I want for me. And I don't want much, just weekly, monthly and yearly totals, and the ability to look at a route in detail if I wish.

Good luck!

As a newer cyclist Strava has been a goldmine for me (until they nerfed FlyBy). I've met quite a few people, found clubs and group rides and generally expanded my circle of friends and acquaintances by a significant amount. I like to see and comment on other peoples rides, I've used it to find routes in unfamiliar areas and best of all I can sort segment leaderboards by weight and age to compare myself to my peers when I want to. The integration with my Wahoo head unit is nice, uploads are quick and on occasion when I've used live segments they've been a treat. The new updated features for mobile and actually very useful. I like how the weather appears when my rides are uploaded and tracking power and heart rate is pretty decent as well. Best all around app I've found.

I tried all the rest; RidewithGPS, MapMyRide, Komoot, Cyclemeter, Edomondo and GaminConnect (when I was using a Garmin Watch) and none of them come close to Strava for all around features. I get that lots of cyclists have a difficult time controlling themselves when it comes to trying to smash segments or they don't like to be "social". If you don't care about friends or like seeing what other people are up to on their rides runs and hikes then using one of the free apps will be sufficient for sure.

Wahoo Fitness on my phone. It's been more reliable and lower resource drain than Strava. After a ride or run I upload the Wahoo log to Strava.

And a XOSS G+ computer with app. After a ride I sync to Strava. It's usually a bit more accurate than Wahoo Fitness or Strava apps. And the XOSS works with my various ANT+ and Bluetooth sensors.

I rarely use Strava to record rides or runs -- it's a little unreliable compared with Wahoo Fitness. The last straw was a year or so ago when they discontinued sensor support for several months. I just quit using Strava to record rides, but still use it to analyze activities and for social networking.

For walks and runs I use MapMyWhatever, but I've never gotten the hang of MapMyRide. The main problem with the MapMyWhatever apps is they don't sync seamlessly with Strava so I have to download the TCX file and then upload to Strava. But the MapMyRun app is excellent when paired with Under Armour shoes with Bluetooth sensor to estimate cadence, stride, etc. Plenty of data for running nerds.

For folks who are primarily concerned about privacy, Cyclemeter might be the best. Highly configurable and all data is stored on the phone by default. Data is not uploaded to Cyclemeter servers (and they warn against wiping and reinstalling the app on phones because that's the only place the logs are stored). You have the option of sharing to Strava, etc., but by default Cyclemeter is private.

Garmin, for recording activities. That connects to STRAVA, TrainerRoad, and TrainingPeaks. Some information I prefer to look at in Garmin, some in STRAVA, some in Trainerroad. I look at TrainingPeaks once in a blue moon.

I used cyclemeter (Premium for $10/yr.) for several years before getting a Garmin. Really liked it for its nice user interface, easy data recall, and more features than I would ever use. I had no issues with battery life on 6-8 hour rides.

The Garmin software on the other hand is god awful mess seemingly written to frustrate anyone but a software engineer. Keep thinking I'll get used to it but after 6 months, it's still frustrating. About the only advantage is the GPS can go a lot farther on a charge than my phone.

I use various Apps for different things, including Training Peaks, Garmin Connect and Strava. I would say Strava is my favourite for bringing all my ride data together in one place and following friends. But I find Garmin Connect useful for finding routes and TP is the best for data analysis and logging training load and fatigue etc
