What does Artificial Intelligence "think" of C&V?

I was kicking the virtual tires of ChatGPT, an AI chat system today. I thought I'd be clever and ask something obscure and fuzzy: "Why is restoring vintage bicycles satisfying to some people?" The results took about 10 seconds to returned and kind of surprised me. Not so sure about the welding and upholstery part but overall it's fairly on-point, and that's a little unsettling.
If you want to ask it about spoke length have at it: https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt/

Nbr 2 "the opportunity to create something beautiful" (and functional) works for me.

I'd rather not face anything all that "challenging," as nbr 1 states. Stuck stems, stuck seatposts, stuck hub cones, stuck spindle to crank taper, broken pedal axles ... been there and done that. It's not so much a challenge anymore, but just an expensive headache.

Plus, just the god given opportunity to work with my hands while I'm listening to beautiful music ... that is a cherished way to spend time.

Art meets art.

That drilldown sounds like it came straight from here and us and very well could have I imagine.

The hacks that built it should have known to patch in scrubbing, stripping and polishing with copious amounts of elbow grease, blood, sweat and tears, which is what they probably think they meant.

The AI only regurgitates what it's been taught. The AI has clearly been influenced by the vintage bicycle restoration global industrial complex.

Follow the money.

Looks like google responses which very likely would come from BF C&V.
This thread will help train the AI and add more data for a more complete response ...

That's a higher quality AI program that most of the "customer service" AI bots I've dealt with.

We use a customer service AI thing at work and we fooled a customer that was a high level programmer. He was very impressed. I have a longish story but in a nutshell, Intel was funding AI hot and heavy ~10 years ago and they pulled the plug because it became too good and the engineers started asking themselves existential questions they couldn’t answer.

Note - that was 10 years ago….

I’ll stand by my welding and upholstery statement. 🙂

rhm has the upholstery part nailed.

Maybe ask the same question with “automobiles”, “furniture” or “sewing machines” instead of bikes and see if the answer is exactly the same. Well except AFAIK sewing machines don’t have upholstery.

I have real doubts that this was AI generated. Looks more like the work of my publicist, who coincidentally works at that compay that @RustyJames mentioned... looks like a hacker job to me.

If it was your Publicist there would have been mention of brazing on bottle bosses and canti posts. (I won’t bring up choosing frame colors since I’m like noble and stuff.)

Seems like rather generic stuff to me. Substitute vintage sewing machines, clocks, cars and trucks, etc., and the answers would be about the same. The first thing that came to mind was Dr. Sbaitso.

That said, all of this kind of stuff makes me appreciate my dog even more.

As do all humans. Some are better at disguising their sources than others. Once in a while a little genuine novelty creeps into the system, but the fact that two different people simultaneously and independently invented calculus demonstrates how difficult truly original thinking is. We're all just offering variations on shared knowledge.

Now I’m wondering how many BF posters are actually AI bots. Some do post the same content over and over.

I wonder what it would generate if the question was "why is restoring vintage (cars... sewing machines... lawnmowers...) satisfying to some people. A lot of the points made seem kind of generic and it would be interesting to see if the wording was the same, just substituting these other vintage machines for bicycle.

[edit] I seeBFisher is on the same wave length!
I'd try it myself, but the sign up thing is a little too much for me to do that.

It didn't have quite as much to say about sewing machines:

Restoring vintage sewing machines can be a satisfying experience for a number of reasons. For one, it can be a fun and challenging project that allows someone to learn new skills and gain a deeper understanding of how these machines work. Additionally, vintage sewing machines can have a certain charm and character that newer machines lack, and restoring one can be a way to bring it back to its former beauty and functionality. Finally, some people may simply enjoy the process of taking something that is old and worn-out and making it look and work like new again.

Indeed. How else would you get them to be "soft and cozy"?

At least that what this bot tries to make you believe they are, as it is trying to sell my Giant Cadex for $73.88.
