Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

the morning started off with a bang. The (flat)rooftop water tank was overflowing. I went up to bang the float and release the switch. And the ladder was gone. The (flat)roofers had moved it out of their way and saw no need to return it. Story of my life. The housekeeper is no longer permitted into my room, except to get, and return the shop vac. Why is it so damn difficult to put things back where you found them? My wife is allowed in my room, and I find my tools scattered throughout the house. She has her own tool kit, but can never find it. Our Canadian neighbor had to physically close and lock his shop, to keep his family out of it.
But the step-daughter arrives this afternoon, with her husband, her toddler and her uncle in tow. They've rented a house at the beach for a week. Another neighbor will be in the house, and in my room, taking care of the critters. She has her own ideas, yet again, about where things that are not hers, should be placed.

Riding with group C for the first hour of this ride and then group B for the second hour of the ride - I defected to the faster group at the rest-stop. Based on HR should I be sticking/staying with group C for a few weeks/month(s) longer before pushing up to B? How should I be targeting 'training' with group rides with end goal of B/A group ride endurance? I mean I can push and just red-line HR for 2 hours straight but I'm guessing that's not a good look health wise or for longevity of my heart and or riding.

Looks like the solo winner for RAAM will finish in a couple hours. Looks like it will be Alan Jefferson after he and Nicole Reist swapped the lead a couple times but she's an hour behind at last check.

Mrs. GJ will be returning Sunday from her puppy-related adventure in SoCal. Puppy is not even remotely housetrained. Luckily it's not our house.

It's been warm here - there was that 100 degree day on Tuesday! - and of course we don't have AC. So every night, I leave as many windows open as possible, along with our jury-rigged whole house/attic fan (box fan in the attic hatch)running all night to suck in cool air and blow the heat out of the attic. Normally, I have to fight Mrs. GJ's tendency to close windows when she feels too cool, which can happen at any temp below 75. I keep telling her, the cooler the house is when she wakes up, the cooler it will be during the day, when it's hot out. A couple times, she's even run the heat in the morning when I've tried to cool the house!

This morning, the living room was a nice, cool 66 degrees when I woke up. It was 76 when I went to bed.

If you can push it for 2 hours, it ain't redline.

Everyone is different. I know a guy who can run 185 bpm for hours with no apparent ill effect. Others, like me, pay a price for red lining for decades.

From my experience the best way to get faster is to ride with faster people but you might want to start a thread about it in the road forum,

Got up early to hit the road and beat the heat, but after only 15 miles of moderate intensity (no riding in anger) I totally bonked. Got home and was very light headed and BP was very low for me. Temp was 81 at 7:30 and 91 at 8:30 so not that hot. Was not dehydrated.

I've had something like that a couple times, but it's always early in the season, like April, on maybe the first ride on a day over 80. Weak, light-headed, vaguely nauseated. Heavy sweating. Generally only once in any given year, and no recurrence. So I've always assumed it reflects lack of heat acclimation. But if you've been riding in the heat already for some time, that doesn't make sense.

did a solo ride on a hot day years ago - high temp in the 90's so my riding buds opted out

did not feel good as ride progressed - and at that time heat usually did not affect me that much

around half way or so through the ride after a slight climb began to feel worse and took a break in the shade near a farm

was sitting against a fence and sloshed my water bottle around - and soap suds appeared

I was drinking soapy water

ugghh
