Did my usual Puente Hills ride.
38 miles and 4700 feet of climb. Legs are feeling it.
Had a healthy Mule Deer bound in front of me descending Turnbull Cyn. Amazing how they can bound up a canyon wall of about 30 feet without missing a step.

Weather is starting to cool down. Hopefully we get some moisture and they'll open up again. I wouldn't mind doing Fern Truck trail since I haven't ridden up there for a few months.

Today I took my new bike build on a shake down ride doing the Griffith Observatory hill climb. Everything is spot on except I didn't anticipate alignment issues using a flat mount fork with post disc brakes + adapter. I swapped the Shimano adapter I initially had for some cheap Amazon post adapter and it has more slack to just barely put my calipers into alignment. I called Pasadena Cyclery and they said they can face the mount, but highly recommend I swap to flat mount calipers instead.

Even with the brake issue, the bike is a few pounds lighter than my alloy bike and is definitely faster on the flats due to the higher gear range and perhaps lighter frame. I added some of my preferred gravel cues like the flared drop bars and GravelKing SS tires (in blue), but I actually consider this more of my road bike!

Agoura/Westlake through Hidden Valley to a loop around Dos Vientos. Mostly an out and back of 44 miles, pretty warm on the road with headwinds starting to blow.

meant to ride either palos verdes peninsula or malibu/sammos on the old, heavy steel '85 pinarello but decided
spur of the moment to investigate the sart east of imperial. wanted to actually go all the way to corona-and back.
knew it was gonna get hot after 11am (but was starting before 7am and thought i could sneak it in). what wasn't
expected was a big headwind along the 91 fwy corridor heading east. it struck consistently heavy once around "the bend"
on the sart about two miles past anaheim stadium. maybe read the entire weather report next time...threw in the towel
in the gypsum canyon area and headed back.
did divert onto glassell and headed south to old town orange, then zigzagged through orange, tustin, santa ana and
costa mesa enroute back to newport beach. did also do a few miles on the santiago creek trail (which i don't think i'd done
any of previously)...that trail might come in handy at some point. felt like low-90's during the zigzagging through orange county
so was definitely trying to avoid getting stopped at any lights. 64-miles with minimal climbing. still need to hit that sart part
up to/past green river and corona and willl probably try again here in the next month, but from the other direction...maybe a little mount rubidoux to gypsum canyon and back when it cools down a little.

20 miles with the Tuesday night group ride. Unfortunately I got a flat in Beverly Hills on our westward bound ride taking Olympic from DTLA, but luckily it was during a quick group stop at La Cienega Park and I was able to change out the tube just in time before we headed back out. I don't get too excited doing flat terrain riding, but I was able to hit higher top speeds with my bigger crankset on the new bike build. Though I don't think I'd want to go bigger than a 50/34 since I do like to hill climb, but I can see how the dedicated road cyclists would like the higher gearing for those long stretches.

24 miles of flat-ish tempo, including 1-1/2 laps with the go-fast group at the Rose Bowl before needed to head home. I could definitely feel my recent lack of time on the bike. Power is down, and legs were loading up with lactic acid very quickly. Also, leaving the house at 5pm set me up for some fairly nervous conditions with the sun directly in line with west-bound streets, and low enough to be in the eyes of the drivers I was sharing the road with. I really don't want to do that again any time soon.

Im rode that path often and is often a wind tunnel thru that pass from Corona to Anaheim Hills / Yorba Linda.
On my rides from Corona to the beach areas and back, Id often stop at the Green River Jack in the Box before thinking about the climb upto the foothills where skylline drive starts.

Really good point and concern about the drivers also being blinded and making harder to see a cyclist. Also, I bet many of them will still be looking at their phones

I always turn on my bike lights here in LA, day or night. Also I ride with a bluetooth speaker both for the tunes and as a way to alert drivers and pedestrians. Also I don't like riding at night, unless I'm riding in a group. I've seen way too many bike accidents and white bike memorials...I definitely don't want to be either!

15 miles to the Griffith Observatory on my weekly uphill pilgrimage climb. This time I took Vista Del Valle Dr. up and also took it down. It's the perfect gravel bike downhill with loose dirt, gravel and pot holes. Also it was a bit cooler today with "overcast" skies, but was due to the smoke from the fires in NorCal!

Headed out just before first light out to my usual SAG at the Jamboree/Santiago Chevron. Then went over to Newport Blvd. down to Cowan Heights Rd. up to Skyline. Wound up then down to Browning then to La Colina to Tustin Ranch. Since it was my 1st time on that stretch most of my attn was on not making a wrong turn! Not a bad neighborhood either! Would be alot tougher going the other way!
Made my way down to PCH then up to the SGRT/Coyote Creek trail back home. FYI the tumbleweeds are taking over the NB half between 7th St. & up the LC fork to Katella/Willow in spots.

Ran a Santa Ana Wind run. Opposite of my usual run down toward the beach. Had a nice headwind as I traveled up from Kramer Ave to Green River Road on the SART. That last hill coming up to the bridge is a killer after a long uphill into the area. Seems to go straight up curving into even steeper looking sections. Had my second water bottle at the top, refilled at Carls Jr . Beverage machine. The ride back down was fast, but with a 15 mph tailwind, the overall effect was a Heat Blast. Not enough wind to cool you in the 90+ degree temps. I had to make a few shady stops just to cool down some. Back to Kramer turn-off pretty quick. Home and cool shower and a Smoothie to recover. 32 miles 2:42 on the Cross Country Bike.

Perfect overcast then sunny day in La Habra Heights - Whittier Hills. Late start and only came across two other cyclists.
Focusing on improving my fitness in the hills. 42 miles and 4900 ft of climb.

Enjoying the re-opening of ANF with a ride to the top of Brown Mtn. Road with a return via El Prieto Canyon. Nice ride. Warm, but not blazing. Feeling my lack of miles, but not pushing super hard. Handling was definitely a bit sloppy on El P, and almost took a tumble on one of the last technical bits. (16 mil / 2300')

I'm running a 32x19. It was pretty tough for a while, and a lot of climbs would require multiple stops to get my HR under control after a steeper section. As my strength has improved, and I've learned how to better control my efforts, I'm now able to climbs like Brown Saddle and Cherry Canyon non-stop. For the stuff I ride most, the gearing works.

Good on ya! That's some tough climbing. I used to ride a 32x20 ss mtb here and that was hard. Was usually some walking involved (but then, I'm old )
I have a cross bike set up ss 38x19 but I don't take that bike up those mountains very often (unless I'm looking to hike).

I've come across a couple of sections where I've needed to hike a bit, but those have become less as my strength has developed. I also tend to pick routes where I know I can ride as much as possible. I turned 53 last week. I'm not exactly in my prime - LOL

38x19 on a CX bike would be a bit limiting in our area, for sure.
