if you’re planning on hitting any of the mission viejo, rancho santa margarita, la habra/whittier hills, anaheim hills, laguna niguel or laguna beach areas…you’ll be happier with that 28 vs the 25. if the toughest thing you’re doing is scr and you’re happier sticking with the flats, then leave it be.

"But Saddleback Canyon Road is relatively narrow and has no bike lane."

My bad. I met Saddleback Ranch Rd that connects from Glenn Ranch Rd to Ridgeline, then, back to Santiago Cyn Rd.
According to ridewithgps it is 1.1 miles and 448 feet of climb (8% ave) and it does have a bike lane.

Sorry, there is no Saddleback Canyon Road in that area. I must have been thinking of Black Star Canyon Road. I am really bad with directions.

Saddleback Ranch Road does look like a nice climb, but followed by a bumpy descent down Glenn Ranch Road because the road has not been paved.

I did a quick 16 miles early morning around Arroyo Seco and the Rose Bowl. I was totally layered up with a wind proof jacket, gaiter, an inner long sleeve layer and arm/legs sleeves. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I don't know how some of these young cyclists can ride with just a bib and jersey in the early morning? I'm a wimp when it comes to the cold!

26-miler in metro san diego riding through the old neighborhood/default ride of kensington, normal heights, university heights, balboa park,
bankers hill, little italy, dtown waterfront and barrio logan. rode past a fave pizza/italian resto that closed after 43 years in biz.
sure, only made it 3-4x a year but still a bummer.

Trying to be more consistent by riding midweek.
Toiled in the local hills and sprinted for the first time in a year and was able to maintain my form without drooping to my injured left shoulder side.
25 miles and 3300 feet of climb. Smog is starting to roll into the SGV again. Need another storm to blow it out.

I am not young, but I have body fat. When the outside temperature is < 60, I just wear one of these under my jersey.

It helps if you first wash and dry them once to make them more form-fitting.

CAT7 have you noticed any discernible and consistent difference in the vehicle traffic volume on Turnbull on weekdays vs. weekends? I'd be on it mid-morning 9-11am window.
Thanks!

Today, I crossed over Turnbull Cyn Rd to/fro between 1030-1130. I encountered maybe 10 vehicles. Weekends are busier after about 1000 with the wannabee racers in their moms' Hondas and the Ninjas. The only close calls I have had is when a Porsche driver thought it was a good idea to pass a couple slower vehicles by swerving into my lane as I was descending.

Midmorning on the weekdays is my preferred time to be on Turnbull or early mornings on Sundays.

Be aware of moisture on the asphalt in the shadows when descending. I have seen a couple of bad roadie crashes when they over-cooked the curves and sled.

Thanks. Lack of weekend warriors is why I limit my Sant. Cyn Rd. rides to Fridays. Old gym buddy of mine lives on Horticultural I keep telling myself one day I'll ride up & knock on his door!

Be aware that cold air settles down into the Rose Bowl/Arroyo canyon. It's always noticeably colder than up top. My daughter's softball team used to have evening practices at Brookside Park next to the Aquatic Center. It got cold AF out there.

A friend of mine (Kevin Martin, aka K-Mart) has a personal policy of not riding when the temperature is less than his age. For me, the K-Mart Line is 53. I don't like riding below my K-Mart Line, but I will on on occasion.

Before the New Year's while riding around Rose Bowl, I saw one female runner doing her laps in just a sports bra and butt-hugger shorts! I wasn't sure if I should look or gasp at how cold I'd be in that outfit!

Based on what I see runners wear in cold weather, and my own limited running experience, runners generate a lot of heat and aren't moving through the cold air as fast as cyclists are.

Yesterday I knocked out a quick 23 miles. I rode S. Arroyo Blvd. to the Rose Bowl and then looped near JPL. I was planning to take Chevy Chase Canyon on the return back home, but the moment the sun was setting, it got cold fast! So I just took the easy route back home south on Linda Vista. I was picking up a good amount of speed on that road hitting 30+ mph, which is always fun, but then you have to climb to get back to Colorado Blvd.!

It's my bluetooth speaker. I don't like wearing earphones when riding for safety reasons, and the music helps to keep me focused when riding. It doesn't weigh much and I have it attached to a Garmin adapter so it stays locked in.

Same 25 mile loop around Irvine as usual. Passed a group of 6 cyclists on Modjeska but the front 4 caught me on Irvine Boulevard around Portola High School. There is something to this newfound theory known as aerodynamics!

I put in 15 of my usual 30. I rode into a light wind that became increasingly stubborn. Pretty soon it was affecting my stability and then the dust reduced vision. So I turned around and did 22+ for the 7 miles back. Legs are feeling that fast cadence high speed run. Hard to keep those 29x 2 inch tires rotating that fast.

Later start and was greeted by pretty stiff wind gusts riding up Pathfinder with hopes of riding into Chino Hills. Changed course and headed back to La Habra Heights.
Finished with 41 miles and 5100 feet of climb. Harbor Blvd -Vantage Pointe and Ardsheal Drive were the climbing highlights.

Saturday - 15mi singlespeed MTB ride to Cherry Canyon. This was the first time I've been on my bike 3x in a week for quite a while. My legs felt a bit flat, but I thoroughly enjoyed a cool and beautiful day with some good dirt therapy.

It was a also very cool to see multiple groups from some of the local HS MTB teams out doing training/skills rides. I'm good friends with the head coaches from the 3 local HS teams, and they all talk about the growth every year. One of the schools has more than 70 kids on the team. One of the groups I came across was all girls, and a few of them blew my doors off on the final pitch to the top of Cherry Canyon. Go girls! #girldad

Sunday - I was expecting to spend all day on a softball field watching my daughter play. However, her games got cancelled. Maybe I should have gotten on my bike, but instead, I spent a good part of the day giving my road bike and MTB a much needed bath and tune up.

Knocked out 30 miles of mostly uphill climbing on a perfect Sunday morning at Verdugo Mountains. I also bumped into an older couple grinding on a pair of of really nice S-Works MTBs. They were super friendly and we chatted it up for several minutes. What I found funny is that they weren't very fond of e-bikes, they only respected those who climbed with their own human motors!
