Use to have one long time ago.

Nothing special. About a $500 new entry level mountain bike from Trek.

shouldnt be a problem to run the 8 speed shifter on the 7 speed cassette. but if you want you can easily pull off the 7 speed cassette exchange it for an 8 like a shimano hg31.

I have a 4300 that has been my primary bike for the last 10 years with around 10k miles on it. I pretty much ride it like a road bike with road tires and also do trails with it. Pretty sturdy, dependable and comfortable bike to ride.
