Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Are Aldis across America essentially the same size? The two that I've been to here are fairly small--about like a drug store.

All that I've been to (a handful in MN and one in VA), were about the same size. I wouldn't say that they're fairly small - I'd say that they're just not the mega-stores that have become the norm, particularly in suburban and small-town America.

They only have ~six aisles.

Baked Haddock with butter and garlic, and garden salad.

No before-dinner snacks or libation, just 4 ozs red wine night cap.

I have GOT to get rid of this belly.

Slow day. Everyone must be making their weekend plans to see the Knoxville Community Band concert + USA Cycling road national championships.

How did you guess?

I miss having the U.S. pro road race championship here in Philly. Back in '87 or '88, when I was relatively new to cycling as an adult, I rode with the 7-11 and then Coors Light teams while they were out for spins the day before the race. It was a pretty funny scene. They were easily cruising along talking at around 23-25 mph while a string of rag tag locals were working at the edge of our abilities to stay in their draft. I'm not even certain I owned a cycling jersey at that point. Many years later I was fixing a mechanical on an MUP when Lance and the rest of the Motorola team whizzed by.

FYI: The men's road race starts at 1:15 p.m., and the band concert is 3:00 - 4:00, so there's a conflict.

I'll probably go down to the race after the concert, even though cycling is a terrible spectator sport, just because.

The QA guys are always the first to go. Like we’re unnecessary or something. Like we’re chopped liver or something.

What’s wrong with chopped liver? You wouldn’t talk like that if you had tasted my Bubby’s. That’s grandmother for you normal folk.
