Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A bike buddy of mine here works for Virginia's department of passenger rail. He just took a work field trip to Miami to check out the new Brightline project between Miami and Orlando (though it's only complete up through West Palm). The trains look really, really nice! Would definitely consider taking one down to Miami to visit relatives if it's much cheaper to fly into Orlando once that link is completed.

Thanks to all for well wishes for Mrs. T. She’s had an exhausting morning and is now soundly asleep. They’ve reduced her pain meds so she was awake a lot this morning and sitting in a chair. Also, she’s started light, very light non-load bearing PT once for today but more tomorrow. Anyway, she’s worn out and back n bed. Zzzz...

Rarely is train travel cheaper in the USofA.

No, but at least it's more pleasant than sitting in traffic. I take the Amtrak up to DC whenever we're flying out of Reagan airport or visiting friends. Takes about as long as driving, but so much more relaxing.

I and my boss will take Amtrak from Philly to Penn Station. A bunch of others are going so there may be more. For some, it may make more sense to drive to Trenton, NJ and get the train there.

Will likely get the Acela Express so I can earn some sweet Amtrak rewards points. I already mapped the walk to where the tour starts. Only a mile, but the big man sounds like he wants to take a subway, which requires a transfer to Grand Central. That seems like more effort than it's worth. My walk to work is about 2 miles, so 1 mile is nothing for me.

I've done Philly-Seattle three times, but not since 2000. Beautiful ride around the edge of Glacier National Park and then through the Cascades the following morning.

What's the fare?

I learned on YouTube that Euro rail (probably other places, too) is much more subsidize that American rail.

With the exception of the NE corridor, U.S. rail exists for cargo and passengers are an afterthought.

From here to Union Station in DC is $33 one way if you get it a week or so in advance. Amazingly (or not, given that it's heavily subsidized), that's actually a good deal less than the cost to drive, assuming you're using the standard $0.54/mile cost or whatever the current IRS deduction is. The driving distance for the same route is about 115 miles.

Whatever the cost, it's a small price to pay to be driving an American classic.

We took the train from Reagan into the city. Very pleasant trip. Some years ago I took the train from Cincinnati to Staunton, Va. It was a very pleasant trip, and much cheaper and shorter than taking the bus from Charleston.

Have a yellow jacket nest in our back yard, underground... reading that a bucket of boiling water with some dish soap dumped into the nest entrance at night is probably the cheapest/easiest way to kill them off... any advice on protective gear to wear? Puffy jacket and jeans plus a balaclava/gloves? They stung our pup a few times yesterday and I got bit looking for the source. They are some angry little bastards.

Not necessarily environmentally friendly, but I used gasoline. Did it late when they were no longer flying in and out, and didn't have any problem. No protective gear used.

They are particularly aggressive at this time of year. I thing they can sting through jeans.

The only thing that went wrong is that it killed a bit of grass.
