Orange Super Sport done, finally...!

I have been assembling this thing over the last week, after getting home from work. It turned out nicely
in my humble opinion. I just about had it done, when I ran into a snag.

I had been soaking the chain for a couple of days, and was extremely happy when I pulled it out of the solvent and wiped it off. If it looked any more like an NOS HKK, it would be. I lubed it, then carefully installed it. I adjusted everything and jumped on for the test ride.

There was a horrible thubthubthubthubthubthub sound coming from the drivetrain. Being that it was 8:30 pm on a Friday, I knew a new chain wouldn't happen. On a tip from Kurt a while back, I went and grabbed a couple of "Speedy Chains" from Wally World after I left the flea market this morning. I installed it, and instantly all racket from the chain ceased. Whew! Smooth and quiet......

Before I installed I held them up side by side, By the tenth link the pin on the HKK was at the middle of the link on the new one. I'm still wondering how a chain that looked new was that stretched.

I'm about to take it around the block a few times before the drunken rapmobiles hit the road, lol.,,,,BD

Enjoy....

The frame from Schleven..... The steel was in good condition but the paint was toast.....

My blue 74 SS, the parts donor machine. A sweet ride but too small unfortunately.

The finished product. I can't help but love it.....!!

Man that looks sweet BD! Great job!

I use the Wally World Bell chains on just about everything. The only time I've had a problem was when the chain was a bit too wide for a Shimano 8 speed cassette.

I just got back from the first cruise around the neighborhood, and already had the first disaster, lol. It started feeling slow and I looked down. The left side of the tire was rubbing the stay, jeez.... The QR got tightened WAY up, and the rest of the ride was awesome. The shifting was super smooth, especially on the front. At least as good as the 600 grey on the R600, and that's about 23-24 years newer. The same crank was on a Sports Tourer my friend just got on ebay. I had one, so I bolted it on. Looks wonderful to me.,,,,BD

Dang! That's a nice looking bike. I'm sure you'll get the problems sorted out.

I had a couple of set-backs on my Raleigh Competition. Mostly sorted out now, but not before I had a real scare.

What's the size on the blue one? Looks like a 56 cm.

Yep, it's a 22 inch. That translates into 55.8 cm by my desktop converter.,,,,BD

<====THIS GUY, hehe. Actually my friend with a vinyl cutting machine did the down tube decal. It's not exact, but looks better than bare paint would. I had the frame glass blasted at a local bodyshop, and used some urethane primer I originally bought for an old Ford Falcon I used to own.

The color is Ford Canyon Copper, which I added a little more yellow to during the mixing. Mixed it myself at work, and got a decent discount to boot. I have a couple of base colors to use now, paint screw ups are a beautiful thing. We can't sell them, so they usually end up sitting on a shelf until I take them home.,,,,BD

Oops..... The crank is an ancient looking Nervar that came on the Falcon San Remo flea market find. I'm not sure what model or year, but it does look sweet huh?,,,,BD

You took the words right out of my mouth. That crankset had me fooled there for a split second - had I not realized it was BD's SS!

Beautiful bike! And I can empathize on the problems during shakedown; on a project with that level of involvement, I often don't make it out of the driveway and onto the street for the first few attempts...

BD, Great job! The crank and barend shifters are perfect.

And start to finish you certainly did beat the timeline on my Dr.Deltron project Super Sport. BTW, it should be shipped by the middle of next week.

I'll take that as a compliment.......

The BB is one of those 3 piece conversion kits that uses a English BB, with 3 allen head bolts. It has a Shimano cartridge setup, that I got from the R600 when I changed cranks on it. It's silky smooth, and the crank spacing is spot on. The inner ring is about 1/4" from the right chainstay. Oddly enough, I couldn't use any of my 80's cranks. They all hit the stay once I started tightening them.

I promise some closeups tomorrow. The battery went dead on the cam, and it ran out of memory. By the time
the battery had charged, it was dark out.

About those cranks.....

Since they are Nervar, they're probably 128 BCD. Do you have a contingency plan for when the chainwheels start to wear? Even on Ebay 128 BCD rings are difficult to find. I've been looking for affordable backups for my Nervar Star cranks. I don't want to replace the cranks if I can get away with it.

I was going to ask if the blue frame is for sale. Thank goodness it isn't in my size. I think the frame and the subsequent divorce would be on the expensive side.

I have two newer (97 & 05) bikes that I do most of my riding on. My vintage bikes might see 100 miles a year, since I have about 12 now. That number keeps growing as I inevitably will find more. I worry more about tire dry rot than I do mechanical wear.,,,,BD

But yeah, that big chain wheel I have no doubt will be hard to find. It bolts to the crank in the middle, kind of like a car wheel. The inner ring and chain guard bolt through that.

Here are the closeups. Not too bad for the first thing I've gun painted in about ten years, and that it's a
non clearcoated finish.,,,,BD

The FD looks like it's mounted too high. It should just miss the guard ring when the chain is on the big ring. It's probably too late to move it since the paint wasn't fully cured when you mounted it.

The bike looks great, otherwise.

An optical delusion. I actually had to move it up a bit because it was hitting the guard. The clearance is about 1/16" of an inch on the rear of the cage. If that's too high, then you have better eyes than me judging by the other pic. It shifts smoothly and that's all I could ask for. The paint cure thing I won't even comment on, nice shot though.,,,,BD

I believe the crank to be a very early Nervar Star, circa 1970, before they dropped the dual bolt circle configuration.

Nice job!
