This works well in practice. 🙂

Viewing angle is a non issue in day to day life, turns out people aren't tidally locked to the sun. You go out for a walk or a ride, and it's either a loop or you come back the direction you came. Hiking is mostly switchbacks. It evens out. Measuring with a watch is like having a left only power meter, consistency and objectivity are more important than what the exact values are.

The biggest complication is that skin reacts to sun exposure over many days and math is required.
