Cheap DIY Shifter Boss Covers
Working on my dad's single speed and found these little plastic leg tips at ACE for like $1.69. I had to grind them down just a bit and stuck them on with some silicone sealant. Should be easy enough to remove if the need arises. The only commercially available covers I found were 20 bucks and didn't look all that great.

Nice one (not that I approve of SS conversions).
On ally and carbon frames, sometimes it's possible to unscrew the shifter bosses, leaving just a pair of holes.

At Trek we used off-the-shelf vinyl bolt thread protectors to mask off the lever bosses prior to painting. They should be available from any well-stocked hardware store.

I originally built this bike years ago when the single speed thing was first going on in Seattle, and eventually gave it to my dad. The frame was a little too big, so when a smaller one came along, I painted it and switched all the components over, but left all the bosses in case it needs to go back to geared. It's kinda funny seeing my 70 year old dad ride around his retirement community on his single speed hipster special...
