Nothing major today but just had the Prologue TT in the stand sorting it out to make sure it's ready to go. My buddy had used it in a triathlon so I had to make sure everything was working fine. Also swapped on a saddle I can use, my Keo pedals and then setup my fit on it. Gonna see if I get a warm, calm day this week to take this out to Antelope Island for a run. 9 mile long causeway leading from the mainland to the island that perfect for getting in a fast ride on this weird beast. My normal route has too many turns, intersections, etc to really use this one.


Hopefully the shoulder holds together and lets me get a full ride in on this. First since the wreck on the Kona in 2018 that jacked me up for riding on this.

May the force be with you, I can usually get them "good enough" and have really tried many times but it is really my Achilles heel, a PITA for me to be sure.

I did recently swap in a new rim on one of my main ride wheels after the wacky offset Shimano rim cracked at half a dozen of the spoke holes, it had plenty of miles but was a POS none the less.

Got it pretty true, centered and tensioned ok, took it to a guru for fine tune only to realize the NDS spokes are probably too short, damnit Jim.

This 92 GT Karakoram. First time using a clay bar to remove some sludgy frame buildup. Not quite the result I was hoping for but I’ll take it.

Tried to modernize the drivetrain on the super sport during last winters build and got frustrated with bottom bracket adapter. Fast forward to today and decided to polish up original crank and installed and whola, back in business. A real mess of mismatched parts to sort out this winter.

Received my Sapim 12/13g spokes and built a wheel around my Atom drum brake hub. It was a bit of an adventure because those spokes are large and in charge! noglider might have had a good point about building 2x around such a large flange, because it would reduce the angle that the nipples leave the rim. We’ll just see how it holds up!



If it fails, I’ll have to order custom spokes in the 240ish length, so I’m hoping it doesn’t come to that. Out of the box, these were bent a bit shy of 90 degrees, so I drilled a 3mm hole in a piece of steel, and corrected them a bit, so the hub flange didn’t take that stress.




It was a chore getting the tensionometer readings on these, but I got things where the drive side nipples felt like they didn’t want to get a whole lot tighter, then went around and got tension as even as possible. We’ll see!

Does a grinder with a cut-off wheel pass as "wrenching"? This wretched Peugeot parts bike resisted all efforts to remove the cotters and I did want to save the frame. With goggles and grinder in hand, I proceeded to quickly remove the rusty, chrome paint sprayed crankset.( I have a better identical one in the parts bin). It must have been awful to ride with that cotter installation induced offset. I have mixed feelings about this bike. It and another Peugeot were donated by the owners daughter after he passed away while riding the bike. I had met him once, but its a very sad time for the family. I have another Peugeot project for a friend to give back to his brother so the parts are welcome.

It’s sort of a specific contractor-type tool, but on one occasion I had to remove cotters from a Peugeot, and my pneumatic palm nailer did an amazing job. It’s sort of like an air-powered punch, and it knocked them right out, and they were undamaged, so they went right back in. Not sure if anyone else has tried one. Probably only appropriate for desperate situations.

Almost done installing these. Need to address minor mounting bolt rub on the front tire but other than that is ready for a test run. VO fenders get some heat for being difficult to install but I have to say they provide plenty of hardware and explain how to use it. It does require patience and some know how otherwise can become frustrating. I enjoyed the process..




I thought the leather washers were cool but only needed to use 1.

Grinding the end of the bolt should do the trick

Picked up this 1974-ish Peugeot UO8. No wheels (I have a set on hand), but the crankset had been upgraded to a Stronglight 52-40, and the seatpost upgraded to a Campagnolo. The original Simplex derailleurs look solid but I haven't decided whether to keep them on, or swap at least the front out as a precaution (understand these are prone to failure). Paint and decals are all in excellent shape and the grime is cleaning off nicely. Think this will look really good once it is done!

I have been trying to get my shop cleaned up a bit and have a bunch of bikes that have been striped and taking up room for way to long so I started putting them back together and getting them ready to move on to new homes. I just finished a Nishiki Prestige that had been sitting here apart for 2 or 3yrs, bike was a dirty mess & for whatever reason the PO painted every part that had chrome plating Gold. I cleaned everything & removed the Gold paint. The bike had Suntour Cyclone M series Drivetrain that I replaced the RD & Shifters ( already had a Accushift FW on it ) with Cyclone a6000 accushift models, new headset & BB were needed & I had a Suntour Cyclone BB that was right at home here, a new Tange headset was installed.I also upgraded the brakes to Dual Pivots with Koolstop pads. Bike rides great, shifts perfect & stops on a dime and gives you change lol.

I love these! I converted one to a 7 speed STI and sold it to a friend. Such a great riding bike and I love the gold wheels. We all have the ones we wish we never got rid of, this was one for me.

Do a bit of searching here for a 110 bcd spider adapter write up that replaces the stock rings. It saves you about a lb and a half and allows you to run any 110 ring. You keep the stock crank.

It's a 6spd Suntour freewheel on a 30~35 year old HardRock. I scavenged the complete bike from the curb side a couple years ago. Cleaned it a little, and then sold it to a friend for $50. I offered it for free, but he wanted to give me something. And since I'm greedy, $50.
Short story long, he got divorced and needed to get his garage cleaned out. So I got the bike back for free. And he gave me a bunch of other stuff. Now I'm thinking - I'll make this my "in-law" bike, it can live down in Louisville, and I'll have a coffeeneuring bike for holidays. The rear wheel felt really looooose. So I think - I'll re-pack the hub!
The Suntour freewheel only had three prongs where it should have 4. So it's looking worse. I put my freewheel tool (the 4 prong deal) and put wrench on it. But my wife and I are about to go to a party, I'm in a little bit of a hurry and just want to break it looooose.
So I put the freewheel tool in a vice, stat rotating the whole wheel like in the YouTube video, and the whole deal just kind of POP! s. I'm thinking - success! Then @#$% starts falling on the floor - the 3 prongs, ball bearings.
Dang - bummer. Anyway, considering the money invested (..... like I invested negative $50 ...?) I'm probably not going to invest any more time. I have much better 26 inch wheels I can put on this thing. I'm the local nexus of vintage bike-crap, so I've got better 26in wheels. Hopefully the Suntour shifter / derailleur will cooperate with a 7 or 8 spd wheel.

You just put a bit of fear in my world. I am about to embark on the Mad Honk method of freewheel removal with an impact wrench. I have exhausted all reasonable and patient methods of separating them, but they just love each other. (Dura Ace hub and Dura Ace freewheel)
