Meanwhile, back at the World Championships...
... another ridiculously powerful performance from Cancellara to become the first man to win four world TT Championships. And on each occasion he has won by more than a minute, this time despite Millar and Martin both riding out of their skins. The man is a phenomenon. A pity that all the action was so overshadowed by doping controversies elsewhere.

When I see Cancellara on a bike, I do not despair for the future of professional cycling.
That Martin puncture cost him second place. At least he didn't trash the bike like the guy who came off on a corner the day before in the U23 TT.

Yes, it probably did - though there's always the possibility that adversity caused him to squeeze just a bit more out of himself than he otherwise would have. Anyway, both he and Millar (and Porte, for that matter) rode superbly, were big margins ahead of the rest, but still got absolutely thrashed by the man. Quite an engine he's got there - and I don't think it's hidden in his seat tube.

I bet Riis is regretting letting Cancellara go. But yes, that certainly was an impressive ride by Spartacus!

Congrats Spartacus. Wow, just wow. However, I really want to know how Martin would have fared if he had not had that puncture. It looked like a pretty efficient exchange of wheels, but having to accelerate back up to speed, combined with the mental impact of knowing your chances to win a world TT were just blown by a mechanical could be devastating. Having these unfortunate circumstances could also push one to ride even harder. I can't help but wonder.

I thought it cost him 30 seconds easily. Maybe he wouldn't have caught Cancellara anyway, but I think it would have been a more exciting race.

I wonder if Cancellara could have gone faster if he has needed to. He did not look as spent as Millar when he finished, and celebrating cost him a little but if your a minute up you have time to celebrate and why shouldn't you.

I was there today & Thor won a great race. It was anybodys at the last turn and he had enough gas in the tank to win an uphill sprint. Brillliant. Great effort by Cadel on his title defence too. He left nothing on the shelf. Brilliant day all round.

Fantastic race by Thor! Really clever riding. He remained invisible until the last turn.
