Chemineau Pictures

As requested, here are some pictures of my 1951 Chemineau. The saddle picture is from an eBay auction I was too late for. I'm still trying to get a replacement saddle for the broken original Henri Gauthier. There are more, and higher resolution shots here: https://community.webshots.com/user/tenordl

Wow, that's a beauty! Have you shared those pics with Jan Heine, editor of Bicycle Quarterly?

Yes, Jan has seen the pictures and read my story of how I got the bike in 1955. He wrote me a nice letter about the history of the Chemineau, and I invited him to come and ride it if he is ever on this side of the country.

By the way, I have a two friends who bought Chemineaus around the same time I did. One of them still has his, and I have been trying to get pictures. His is set up more for racing, and has tubular tires and close ratio gears, but the same derailleur. The other guy had a nice 650B touring model, but he trashed it. I wish I had that bike now! That one had the hammered aluminum fenders and front and rear racks, generator light mounted on the fender, etc.

Back in the fifties, our friends with their Italian Legnanos used to say our French frames were too "whippy", but I never had a problem with that. I liked the fact that my bike weighed less than anything other than a fixed wheel track bike!

Joe
I only rode it about three times last year, one of those times was the pre-show vintage bike ride at the Lars Anderson show. I tend to ride the Univegas and the Nashbar or the Schwinn more, especially now that I know how rare the Chemineau is.

New Chemineau Pictures

Since the last pictures I posted, I've put new fenders on the Chemineau, as well as a replacement Henri Gauthier saddle that I got from French eBay. I also put the Maxiplume cottered aluminum cranks back on, and I found a more appropriate tail light.

Those mudguards are just brilliant. What a beautiful bike.

Thank you for sharing that with us.

I think things like this are why I love Classic & Vintage...

I have some new Le Chemineau pictures in my Wool Jersey album (see link below). The new ones are of two small-frame 650B touring bikes. They are in pretty good shape for being well over 50 years old.
