"I know there are tandem categories at some races. I know this very well actually because there was one in a race I did a week ago."
Botto, can I get a golf clap-(I've exceeded my 100kb limit)
Sorry again!! You just have a certain charisma about you -,you can make a 26+mph ride on the flats for a 100 mi. seem like a walk in the park!!(which for people like me,It's no walk, not even on a tandem with someone strong.)
For USCF rules,to me they're more like local club guide lines, for example following my first(USCF) crit-for 5 bucks extra I rode my second with the cat 3's all on my 1 day license(USCF police were off that day,I guess???)
On the Obvious-When you race a tandem, you don't just tuck yourself into the pack and hang for the next hundy-they are not that nimble.Ask kendal they are out front working.
I know you didn't call me a dim-witt,but couldn't help writing you a little ditty, and it goes like this 1,2,3
Why am i such dim-witt?,umd doesn't love me so i quit
2nd verse
why am i such a dim-witt ,umd can't suck the wheel of a tandem,so he quit
Peace out -LOL

I got pulled in my first race in 7 laps of a 40 lap crit. I stuck with it and finally finished my 4th race in the back and won my 14th.
You can be great on your local training rides with your chums, but racing is the real thing and takes real experience to achieve success.

My first race was a Cat 4/5 omnium.
I flatted on the 8-mile time trial and was 8 minutes back by the time I finished, having fixed my flat.
Second stage was a crit. I got lapped pretty quickly.
Third stage was a 52-mile road race (two 26-mile loops). I and several others were dropped about 5 miles in. At about mile 21, the 35+ masters were coming up behind us. The guy in front of me turned back to look, cut across and took out my front wheel. I crashed.
100 yards later, he took out almost the entire 35+ field.
I ended up finishing the race on my own, though well behind everyone.

I just started riding sorta seriously this past June. My first race was a 20min heat with a 5 lap (1 mile) shootout. Stupidly, I rode 40 miles that am and didn't really have enough gas to push as hard as I would have like. I pulled too many laps and got smoked on the final sprint. I came in second but that's still the first loser. I learned a lot though.

My first race was a 4/5 criterium, and I was ejected OTB at about the 1/3 mark - I was totally not prepared for such a high effort with little to no chance for recovery. I'm still learning - the power's there, but I usually train solo and need to develop better tactics/pack riding skills to be able to conserve my energy for a better placing finish.

moving target
my first race was a 35 mile alley cat in a city i wasn't from.
it was partners, and I won best from out of town with about 200 racers.
i am on the right in jeans

So i did my first race today and i sucked so bad. Im not trying to make excuses or anything but this whole week my legs have been so fatigued. I don't know why, It frustrates me. So back to the race. While i was racing i was pulling for 2 laps but then i started to feel my legs on the inclines. And when the riders started to move up one by one physically i started to feel the lactic acid build up more and more. So eventually i got dropped. I tried pretty hard to pull them back in but my legs said no but my mind said go. But my legs took over. I should have just drafted. But it was my first race, i need more experiences. How did you guys or gals do?
< 20 mph on the TT and came in close to last in almost every race I did afterwards. The following year, I averaged ~25 mph on the same TT course and did much better in the criterium (though I didn't finish b/c of a mechanical).
It's been a while since I've raced, but don't get too discouraged.
