Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Madone SSL 6.9 *a roll of the dice*

2006 Madone SSL 6.9 presented itself to me today for an unreal (and undisclosed) price....at least for the time being.

The only problem is the rear derailleur hanger is thread stripped and will need to be factory fixed. So my question is....can I trust that Trek will replace the hanger/dropout without a negative effect on the integrity of the frame? Have any of you gone through this? I worry about the carbon bond.

Comments.....opinions.....I'm all ears.

Judging by what you're saying, it's an integrated derailleur hanger. You can trust that they'll do the job right, just be prepared to pay some money. You might want to get a quote from a Trek rep to see if the bike is worth it in the end.

If it isn't integrated though, that's a $50 fix at max.

You might want to run the serial number by Trek to see if it's stolen or not.

eh. 3 year old bike, needs factory attention... not sounding ideal. would definitely need to know the price to make an informed decision. it is a sweet bike though.

I'll give them a call....or have my LBS call to represent me. In all honesty, it would have to be a huge expense to break my deal.

My knowledge of carbon frames is nearly non-existent, which is why I ask this elementary question.

Thanks for the input. I hope to post a pic of a "new to me" Madone 6.9 before long.

I guess it would help to know the deal....

It's $1000 as is. I take care of the hanger/dropout repair.

As I see it....the wheels are worth more than that!

BTW, this is *not* a joke. I really don't know crap about carbon repairs.

I have a perfectly wonderful Lemond Chambery w/ full Ultegra.....I was just weighing the situation.

That was the angle I was taking, but the wife (banker) is squeezing my balls over this deal.

Yes but hopefully the drrailleur hanger is not made of carbon......assuming its aluminimum, the simplest and best fix is a helicoil. A good bikeshop should be able to insert it for $20-40. Or you can buy the kit and do it yourself. The threads will be just as strong if not stronger than before

P.S. why is the bike so darn cheap? usually thats a red flag as to who its past owner is/was (i.e. stolen)

If it's just stripped, you might be able to get away with a derailleur hanger saver: https://www.universalcycles.com/shopp...&category=3463

I don't know if that will work with a carbon hanger or even if that bike has a carbon hanger, but it's worth checking. It's a lot cheaper than sending it to Trek.

I highly doubt that the derailleur repair will cost an additional $1000. Do it. Now.

Also, I know that you already considered this viewpoint, but even if the frame has something wrong with it, the extra parts alone can be sold to possibly buy that bike over!

If it's indeded a XXX wheelset, you have yourself a smoking deal. Worst thing is you strip the components and build yourself a sweet fixie.

It looks like there was a Madone SSL 6.9 in 2007 but the 2005/6 model was simply called a Madone SSL. Which do you have there?

I think it's the 05/06 SSL. I may have wrongfully described it as a 6.9 simply because the components are all top level. Nevertheless, it's a pretty amazing package......that I hope to nab for what seems to be chump change.

Yes, Trek is a reliable company and will not screw you over on a 9 thousand dollar bike.

If it cannot be repaired with a "Timesert" ....notice I did not say Helicoil.... then I'd send it back to Trek and have it properly replaced. Then you'll have a very sweet and top of the line Madone SSL for next to nothing. Don't wait...buy it.

Not that this will answer your specific question, but this video is informative on trek and carbon assembly (and design). I'm sure someone posted it here before, but I happened across it last night and found it enlightening. FWIW...enjoy.

$50 for Trek to fix, but your dealer will need to send it in.
