The real problem is that they stick out. Yes, black makes them less obvious, but better would be flush valve stems. Lighter, much more aerodynamic and far better looking. (Trouble getting the air in? That air stuff is also heavy. Skip it.)

It would be kind of hard to inflate tires without a thing sticking out to put the air in

Perhaps valve on the rim walls like disc wheels on TT bikes do, but you'd need very deep wheels (70-80mms at least?).
