Had a really good turnout with many new faces joining our stalwarts. One of the “newbies” rode up on a gorgeous Richard Moon and someone pointed out to me it was actually Richard Moon! We were back to our traditional route now that the trail mudslides have been cleared up.

For the third Saturday ride in March, we are going to head down the trail to check out some Sacramento Cycling history. One of Joe and Rich’s recent YouTube videos highlighted the journal and photographs of a fellow who documented his work in bike shops in Sacramento and Stockton in the late 1800s and early 1900s. We’ll use the “Gorham Memorial Ride” to get some photos at the referenced addresses. This will also be a great opportunity to scoot over to the Camellia garden in the Capitol and get a group photo in front of the Camellias in bloom.

Below are some photos from the ride. I missed a few people so if others could fill in the gaps, that would be great.

Many thanks to the Sacramento contingent for a great time and for welcoming a Bay Area boy. Lots of beautiful bikes. Lots of great people to ride with. Lots of sunshine. More than worth the drive up from the Democratic People's Republic.

Sounds like a fun ride! I just went through the album, and it looks like the two addresses mentioned and photographed that were/are in Sacramento are 725 K Street and 914 9th Street. Here are some stills from the album- The first four shots, taken in 1898, show what was "F.M. Tonez (or Tones) Cyclery" at the 725 K Street address. The fifth shot, taken in 1904, shows a large bike shop at 914 9th Street. The photographer (George Gorham) didn't give the name of the large shop.

I bet even a gentle routine turn on that double-decker induced some serious pucker factor. That's assuming of course, that it was possible to get that thing to move forward in the first place.

From the way the frame is pitching slightly forward and all the weight of the two riders is bearing straight down on that poor fork that looks like it's got an extreme rake... Not sure if I'd rather be on the top or the bottom. That being said, if I turned one up, I'd give it a whirl!

In America I think so. Things started to go south around 1899. Motorcycle and car popularity along with a depression. In Europe, there were some French companies just starting to catch their stride. They would thrive until WW1.

Long range forecast looks good for next Saturday. We are going to do a flat, downriver route of 37 miles at a conversational pace. Our plan is to take some quick photos at two addresses that are mentioned in Gorham’s journal. (If you don’t know what this refers to, look at the link to the YouTube video in one of the previous posts.)

We will then take a new group photo at the circle in front of the State Capitol just before returning to the start. (Look your C&V sharpest!) Coffee break at Mill’s Coffee on the return.

Fun ride today! We had a little adventure into Downtown Sacramento while seeking out one of Gorham’s bike shop locations. Really like that we got to take a group photo at the Capitol. Coffee stop at Pivot Coffee on the way back.

We stopped at the 725 K Street location mentioned by Gorham. The building is still there but is a cellular telephone retailer. The other location on 9th Street is completely gone. That shop is on the block where the Sacramento Main Library and the Art Deco skyscraper are now located. Some photos below.

The theme for the month is Switzerland! No requirement to ride a Swiss bike, but to those that have them, bring them! For the rest, red and white will be the theme colors of the month. (Weinmann, Edco and other Swiss bike parts also will carry the day.)

I will have a small prize for the rider who best exemplifies the theme!

Will be our typical route up the trail to Folsom of 27 miles and about 1,100 feet of gentle climbing on mostly bike trail grades.

(I recognize this is not the typical third Saturday, but this is a weird month with 5 Saturdays and this keeps the rides spread out better. It also avoids a conflict with a number of popular rides taking place the weekend of the 15th.)

Great photos of tghe crew on what I am sure was a great ride. Once again, life got in the way - not in a bad way, just in a non-cycling way. Rumor has it there will be another ride like this one in about a month. Maybe I can tag along on that one . . . .

Next ride is May 20th which is the 3rd Saturday. Only change is that we are going to move the rides back to 9 a.m. now that the mornings are getting warmer and the sun is coming up earlier. We moved the winter ride starts to 10 a.m. during the winter when it was colder.

We will have our regular third Saturday ride on May 20th with a 9 a.m. departure from the parking lot of the Starbucks in the Gold River Shopping Center. That ride is the typical 27 miles with about 1200 feet of accumulated gentle climbing on the American River and Johnny Cash Bike Trails.

Delta Shuffle Ride
In addition, we are having a longer ride the week before on Sunday, May 14 at 8 a.m. that will depart from the Bella Bru in Carmichael (5038 Fair Oaks Blvd, Carmichael, CA 95608) and take us down the Delta to Clarksville. This ride is being done at the same time as Cycle Folsom’s ride on the same route. This route is about twice as long but relatively flat. (54 miles and about 600 feet of accumulated climbing.)

I plan on riding one of my vintage lightweights but you can be flexible because of the longer distance. I am not going to be the Eroica police. Not going to be a hammer fest. Looking for a nice, enjoyable conversation pace of 15-16 mph moving speed average over the whole course.

Starts at the Bella Bru parking lot in Carmichael and heads downriver via American River Drive and through East Sacramento into Downtown. We will make our way through West Sacramento and down into the Delta to Clarksburg which will be the turnaround. Holland Market will be open for a refreshment stop. There are also good bathrooms at the park when we cross into Freeport.

We will cross the Green bridge into Freeport and make our way back through Riverside and Land Park to Sacramento. M Street Corridor back to the bike trail for the return to Bella Bru.

Get yourself some extra #MIBM miles by biking to and from the ride start to make it a metric century! (Or just park at the ride start since there is a big parking lot adjacent to the Bella Bru.)

• Make sure your bikes are in good working order and you are prepared to deal with mechanicals like flats.
  
• Use good cycling etiquette and be respectful of other cyclists and all persons using the roads we travel.
  
• Be capable of completing the ride. We do not have Sag support so be sure you can make the distances if you choose to participate.
