Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Confirming what I've posted before--that autopilot does most of the flying for the pilots as we head to a robotic future.

Stupid. 2 pilots are not in the cockpit because it takes 2 pilots to land a plane. 2 pilots are in the cockpit to back each other up. When things go wrong, it happens fast. You want another person there to assist. Running checklist and hand flying in an emergency is not something you want to be doing alone, especially when it requires system to be shut down. Automation is a tool it’s not the end game, and automation has to be monitored at all times. Just because the autopilot is programmed to do something doesn’t mean it’s going to do it.

I always use “sport” to start but mrs datlas uses a different start every day. Unclear which strategy is better.

Sounds like you're getting nervous.

Not really. It won’t happen on passenger planes in my career, but maybe cargo.

What people don’t understand that are pushing this, it would change the whole rest rules for pilots.

A single pilot in a scheduled operation would only be able to do one flight. That’s double the cost of hotels for any company, it’s not efficient. BTW a south west captain had a medical emergency inflight the other day and had to be removed from the cockpit.

A couple years ago, the buzz everywhere was that self-driving cars were coming really soon, and it would usher in a safer future. Then there were a couple deaths attributable to the autonomous systems, and now nobody's talking about it.

People are still talking about it.

We're like 90% there. Granted, the last few percent are the most difficult, but it will come.

We can more easily accept human error than machine error.

The liability paradigm has yet TBD. But once it is, and it can be shown that robots are safer, the insurance companies will follow.

The insurance companies need to be robotized first. If that was already the case, @DougRNS would have had a functioning back two plus years ago.
And frankly, the bookkeepers should be robotized as well. It would be pretty easy to program.
