Operation day!

First objective - Swapped the bars. Cut 48mm off of each end of the RF Turbine bars and swapped them onto the bike. I kept the Ergon GP5 grips and will fine tune them when I can get outside. It was easy other making me wish I owned a band saw to cut the bars. The RF bars were lighter than the Cannondale bars before surgery and even lighter after the cut.

Pulled the chain for cleaning. Checked it for stretch and it’s in spec. I’m guessing one good season and it’ll need replaced. Cassette looks good and the original FSA crank has lots of life left in it. The chain is getting a long soak in Park Tools CB-4 and then some brush work. I also cleaned the cassette and rear derailleur.

The crank swap proved to be more challenging. The FSA crank removal was easy and straightforward. The right crank arm forces itself off when you loosen the bolt. Pretty slick design!

I know it is really dirty. A good cleaning this winter was in the plans before the move east. Finally making time for it.

Getting the FSA BB out turned out to be a pain. Finally got both sides loose and started disassembly. Bearings themselves were fine.



Then I found a surprise!

I had my own hidden beach inside the BB. No sand in the bearing.

I’m not sure how the sand got inside the frame but it’s out now. The worst part of the new BB install was working the fine sand out of the threads. I can’t find my 3/8” torque wrench since the move and the 1/4” does not allow for the 35-40 NM needed to torque the bearings. I messaged a friend to see if I can borrow his but I’m about ready to go buy a new one and be done.

While waiting for the friend’s response, I cleaned up the frame and applied some Maguires Cleaner Paste wax. It has a mild abrasive in it and brought more shine to it. I’ll keep working on it and hope to reduce the matte finish to more of a gloss. The metallic does show up more with more shine. That’s the top bar after several coats.

The borrowed torque wrench did not happen. Looks like it’s NEW TOOL DAY for me. Home Depot owns me with all the home repairs so what’s another purchase?!?

I have a video of the crank free spinning with pedals but not sure how to host it for the forum. It’s quiet, smooth, and turns so easily. Definitely different than the FSA stuff that came on the bike.

I'm also thinking about upgrading to 105 brake calipers while I'm at it. I like the idea of having all 105 components on the bike. Why? Because I can. I do some research and share my discoveries.

105 calipers might be flat mount - not sure (?)

I have RS785 calipers on my Q1D - I believe they are considered to be XT / Ultegra level (?)

RS785 calipers are post mount with straight brake hose fittings - so they are a direct swap and permit use of the existing BH59 brake hose (BH90 is recommended but not required)

the better calipers also permit use of the better (narrow track) rotors and pads (I have RT86 IceTech rotors)

yes - the OEM brakes are fairly good

but I have better brakes on another bike (CX1) - so this motivated the upgrade to the Q1D when I was planning to replace brake pads (the new calipers included pads)

also had annoying issue with the front caliper - intermittent pad drag ... caliper (piston) possibly hanging up

After completing some more of the basement insulation work I was able to reorganize the space - now I have more space for bike repairs. Decided to remove the brake pads and check wear. After approx. 3,500 miles, the wear is what I expected and are getting close to needing replaced. Cambria has Shimano pads on sale I ordered them along with some other 105 upgrades.

I want to explore options before I decide on the brake upgrade. I'm still thinking 105 calipers to go with the rest of the 105 goodies. I like things to match...
