Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cervelo warranty replacement + stripped crank bolt

Hi all,

Well my S1 is finally showing those seatpost cracks on the frame so it looks like im getting a new s2 frame as a warranty replacement.

Here is the problem: my lbs stripped the nut that you need to remove the crank during maintenance 1 week ago, Which means that they will not be able to transfer the old crankset from my s1 to the new frame. They blamed the factory torquing.
I should have made a bigger deal about it, but didnt; i figured id never need to remove it...

Should i ask the lbs to ask cervelo to replace the crankset since the crank on my s1 is not reusable, as a result of cervelos overtorquing...

Thanks

U

If you're getting a '14 S2, there's a very good chance Cervelo will even include their OEM BBright crankset with the frameset. I'd recommend you send an email to cervelo as well explaining what happened. I find it difficult to believe the factory torque made it possible for your LBS wrench to strip the bolt.

I was a regular on the cervelo forums when I had them and recall reading about several owners who were given OEM cranksets along with their BBright framesets. If its a '13 S2 you're given, then its still a BSA frameset and the reason why you should email cervelo regarding the issue with the stripped bolt.

I think it's the fault of your LBS for the crank issue. If Cervelo does not warranty the crank, then the LBS needs to fix the problem. Been there, done that.
Cheers

For what it's worth, my BBRight R3 didn't come with a crank. Which was fine with me, I'm running my Ultegra crank with an adapter.

The 2014 S2 is a much better frame than the 2013.

Seems like getting a S2 for a S1 is enough of a gift. And a free crank? Your LBS screwed up, and the initial torque probably did not strip the bolt - a hamfisted mechanic probably did. The bolt can still be removed with a specific drill bit that removes stripped bolts. If the LBS didn't even know about that I would suspect incompetence on their part.
