Strange engraving on Sunshine hub
Was just cleaning this nice Sunshine high flange hub up a bit and noticed it has some strange engraving on the flange. It looks homemade to me but I can't think of what the pattern might indicate. Any ideas?

wonder if it might be a personal identification number as for a driver's license or military identification?
BTW - the round flange holes of the hub are a helpful dating aid; iirc they ended ~1973
there is an earlier generation of these with the small round flange holes where the dustcaps are press fit to the cones rather than to the shell - they can be a bit of a pain to work on...

I remember reading that folks used to carve their SSN's into their bike frames as a theft recovery aid (long before identity theft!), so maybe that's what the last 9 digits are? No idea what B200 would refer to.

I never would have thought of drivers license! That does make sense though given most of them start with a letter.
It's an interesting idea to put it on the hub, seeing as that is an easily removable part of the bike. But I guess it is a little more obscure that way too, and definitely something you would need to know was there

That is the exact pattern used for a Michigan driver license.

I wish I had a dollar for every tool I own with my SS number engraved on it. I'd spend it all on bicycles. In the day our shop teachers told us to use the SS number to mark our tools. Sadly as it turns out, in the shop these days too many don't respect someone's tools enough to return them no matter how they are marked.

In this day and age of identity theft I'd like to point out that engraving social security numbers onto anything that might be stolen is not a good idea.

While I agree that your social security number isn’t something you want advertised these days, you couldn’t see a reason against it so much in ’81. But then again I look back I don’t see any reason we thought it would be a theft deterrent. The only thing I vaguely remember is horror stories about entire Kennedy stacks being stolen but those were probably just that, stories.

During my college days ('78-'82) all our grades were posted by our S.S.#'s on the bulletin boards outside the classrooms.

Until about 2002, every college/university ID I had (and I had a lot as a student at various levels and then as faculty) had our SS# as our ID #s printed on the card.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure my first driver license number, issued in VA in the 80's, was my SSN.

Until a few years ago, the nuclear plant where I work used the SSN for dosimetry issue. When Identity theft started getting more common, they finally got enough complaints that they changed to another system.

When I was in the military in the 1980s, it was the same. I had a stencil to paint my number on everything I owned.

Back in my day ...
I'm old, too.
Cool looking hubs. I would polish the hell -- er etching -- out of them.
