bike shop
hello people; I was at a shop needing something for my new to me Hardrock. There was a fancy road bike there waiting for something. I always heard that they keep their tire pressure really high so I gave the tire a squeeze and there was no give at all. It ended up the guy standing next to me owned it. He said it was at 100 psi and he use to have it at 120. Also it was a Specialized S road bike that went for 14 grand and he got it for like 10 grand. Holy crap Bat Man. I had to say something and that was "you must be the leader of the pack" he said "no just in the pack"

Hope he insured it. There is far great chance of totaling a $14,000 bike vs $14,000 car and the same accident that would total a $14,000 bike might only put a small scratch on a $14,000 car.

What’s with the repeated fear mongering? Guess it’s your particular schtick. Reminds me of the one-time poster who kept up with the “I’m afraid of [fill in the blank]”. Not creative in the least.

It's typically the more expensive weight weenie variety that is more susceptible to major damage. Not a problem if you can have it insured.

I actually never wrecked a bicycle yet. But I knew some who scrapped their lightweight carbon bike or the frame due to cracks following a simple fall that would not have harmed a much cheaper metal bike.

A relative of mine broke the bank to buy one such bike "to keep up bla bla bla" but his wife left him. I don't think buying an expensive bike is just to keep up in speed. It's more than that. Snobbery in different forms is real among "wannabe elites". It's deeply ingrained in the human culture not just in cycling.
Ofc, it's not an issue if you can easily afford the bike that you're buying.

High end technology costs...doesn't matter what it is...didn't read anything about "snobbery" in the initial post...he indicated he was "in the pack" and not "leader of the pack"...but snobbery abounds or perhaps reverse snobbery or maybe just...

I have zero clue what the original post is about. Is the poster confused about appropriate tire pressure. Does he think tire pressure and bike cost are related, or does he think that the guy must be really fast because he uses a particular tire pressure? If the thread isn't about tire pressure, why is half the thread about tire pressure?
Is the poster unsure about what s/he is trying to say?
If the idea of the thread is that some bikes cost a lot .... um, wow, breakthrough realization. $14 K isn't really expensive for top-end machinery nowadays .... but so what?
Is the post about the OP judging some guy for buying what he wants? Is the OP jealous? Or just feeling superior for nor wanting some things and having different things?
Is there a point to any of this?
As far as I can tell, the "purpose" of the thread is to show us all that starry bra photo, which I did find amusing. Well played.

I've had customers occasionally come into the non-profit Co-Op where I work & specialize in $200-250 bikes & express genuine puzzlement at the "extravagance" of a $2000 dollar bike.
Sometimes I bite my tongue, sometimes I don't.
He's not there to hear about my bikes, or why Tourney is the flimsiest garbage or why single piston mechanical disc, or 135mm wheels with freewheel hubs are trash; He is establishing "in group/out group" signaling.
But every bike in there is 20-30 years old & adjusting for inflation is probably about equivalent to a $2000 bike in today's money for one reason or another. The way I see it, that customer is getting a heck of a deal if only he would put down the snobbery long enough to see it.
If the $100 bike in 1972 is the $700 bike of today...What's the $100 dollar bike of today worth?
