Part of the learning curve for racing is figuring out where your strengths and weaknesses are, and how to apply those to the race in a way that benefits you the most. Sprinting isn't just about raw peak power, but about positioning, timing...and mental determination. A big step forward for me was the improvement of my threshold power, and getting to the point where I could move where I needed to move in the closing laps of the race, and not burn the matches I needed for the finish. New racers have a tendency to be overwhelmed by the surge at the end, and have nothing left when it's time to unleash the fury.
This applies to a lot of sports...Work on minimizing your weaknesses, but put a lot of focus on making your best strength the sharpest weapon you have. For cycling, there will be significant suffering involved.

Still figuring out my strength. I think that I can hammer a long for extended periods of time, as well as recover pretty quick might both be my strengths, but for now I know my weakness is my top end, lack there of. Giving it my all doesn’t last long enough in my opinion and also doesn’t get me the speed that I would like either. I need to work more on building power as well as my sprinting form and technique. I don’t get low enough, as well as perfecting which gear to be in. This winter I plan on focusing on increasing power output, max power out put as well as raising my FTP.

One of the guys I ride with is into gravel, he is the one I mentioned yesterday as "Gravel Guy" and he is leading a gravel ride on Saturday. I don't have a gravel bike but I do have a CX bike. Some of the roads he plans to ride on are gravel hills with 10% grades which would be fine if paved, but I am not a confident gravel/off road rider. I know that working on these skills may make me a better road cyclist, so I should go ahead and do this ride.....but I am also a scaredy cat so might try to find a roadie ride instead.

They are CX tires, maybe 33mm? Way wider than road tires. There might be some loose rocks which scares the carp out of me. I have done some tame gravel rides with this bike and it's fine for that. But the more technical stuff that is bordering on MTB territory makes me squirm.
but dirt / gravel roads roads with an unpredictable surface including loose stuff - on just about any tire size - can be challenging

The changes definitely seem to help, there's still some mild discomfort but not anything like before.

Pennsylvania. Near the border with Delaware, home of tax-free shopping. Also near Kennett Square, which is a big mushroom growing area. You can often smell them in the air.

body weight. If this goes well, I think I might start doing this every other month. Your plan is what I hope to be able to achieve. Looking back at my first race if I could have started the sprint right out of the last turn, I would have jumped everyone. I waited but still burned out before the finish line.

The caveat to this is that I’m also not the best person to take advice from on this matter as I’m generally careless/fearless descending at high speeds on unknown gravel roads. At Rasputitsa this past spring I hit a bunch of deep stuff going in the mid 40s and barely held on.

We ride through there frequently on our club rides. BEWARE! There is a front-wheel eating grate on State Street just West of Route 41.

So...My 40th high school reunion is this June. In 2018 I I combined a bike tour with my 35th reunion. Started in northern VT, stopped at reunion weekend in western MA and then continued on home.
I feel compelled to do something similar for the 40th just so I can show off again, but I really want to go back to MT during the same time period.
