Addiction 2022.4

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A big step forward for me was the improvement of my threshold power, and getting to the point where I could move where I needed to move in the closing laps of the race, and not burn the matches I needed for the finish. New racers have a tendency to be overwhelmed by the surge at the end, and have nothing left when it's time to unleash the fury.

This applies to a lot of sports...Work on minimizing your weaknesses, but put a lot of focus on making your best strength the sharpest weapon you have. For cycling, there will be significant suffering involved.

Still figuring out my strength. I think that I can hammer a long for extended periods of time, as well as recover pretty quick might both be my strengths, but for now I know my weakness is my top end, lack there of. Giving it my all doesn’t last long enough in my opinion and also doesn’t get me the speed that I would like either. I need to work more on building power as well as my sprinting form and technique. I don’t get low enough, as well as perfecting which gear to be in. This winter I plan on focusing on increasing power output, max power out put as well as raising my FTP.

It took me a while to sort myself out. I spent a while riding in the service of others as a flatland motor and leadout guy before my sprinting skills/strength really developed into a usable weapon at the Cat 3 level. Also be aware that every racer can - and certainly should - work on their sprinting strength and peak power, but not everyone is built for sprinting as their best racing weapon.

33mm tire sorta/kinda on the small end for that type of riding

but dirt / gravel roads roads with an unpredictable surface including loose stuff - on just about any tire size - can be challenging

he played multiple sports - including football, basketball, baseball, outdoor track

the squats / lunges really helped - big increase in his burst

I have been riding a Praxis Alba 175mm, just switched in a set of FSA Gossamer 165mm. Also raised the saddle height on all my bikes quite a bit, even so I still have a 15-20mm of heel drop.

The changes definitely seem to help, there's still some mild discomfort but not anything like before.

Just do it. It’s not any harder and much more fun generally.

Do whole body- once I started lifting heavy 2-3x per week, I became a much stronger rider and more able to hold an aero position. I sacrifice extra miles for going to my personal trainer, but we likely have different goals

The caveat to this is that I’m also not the best person to take advice from on this matter as I’m generally careless/fearless descending at high speeds on unknown gravel roads. At Rasputitsa this past spring I hit a bunch of deep stuff going in the mid 40s and barely held on.

We ride through there frequently on our club rides. BEWARE! There is a front-wheel eating grate on State Street just West of Route 41.

The riding in that area is pretty good. Poke me if you need any good routes.

So...My 40th high school reunion is this June. In 2018 I I combined a bike tour with my 35th reunion. Started in northern VT, stopped at reunion weekend in western MA and then continued on home.

I feel compelled to do something similar for the 40th just so I can show off again, but I really want to go back to MT during the same time period.
