I used to like the darker anodized brake shoes and quick release on the original 7700 parts, but the polished versions on the 25th Anniversary set just seem way more classy.

me too, not to mention that spare parts for the 25th anniversary are impossible to find, that is why I prefer the standard 7700 even if the25th anniversary are aesthetically much more stunning

Again, I like the more-silver 25th Anniversary chainrings compared to the regular 7700. And of course the ubiquitous white lettering on the RD.

I admit I’m a sucker for the branding/lettering on the crank dust caps. I’m trying to find an aftermarket set. I’ve been able to get a 25 th Anniversary rear derailleur, brakeset and some headset parts, so hopefully a set of these will show up eventually.

Zullo

I didn't know this Italian builder, ZULLO.

It's a beautiful bike, of course with DA 25th anniversary set.

Yeah, I’ve got that page saved as a favorite. It had the first pics where I really noticed the polished brake shoe holders and quick releases, and was really smitten with those features. A beautiful bike.

You know, I like 7700 myself, since I have them on both my red and blue Tommasini road bikes. However, like many of you, I’ve been having a hard time finding replacement hoods. If one wants to get them for theirs, one has to shell out over $100 on eBay. That’s a lot of dough for 24 year old (or so) rubberized hoods. Now, I know Hudz made by ODI, manufactures several hoods for more recent road levers but ODI does not make a 7700 DA series of hoods.

We got enough dedicated members here on Bike Fourms who love 7700s; why not persuade ODI or someone else to make replacement 7700 hoods? Don’t tell me you haven’t already thought of this!

FYI: Now, look, we all know several companies manufacture replacement hoods for vintage Campagnolo Super Record, Nuevo Record, etc., but 7700s are nice!

I’ve already mentioned the dust cap branding, but it looks like the crank bolts are Titanium too. Stunning. I don’t think we’ll see the likes of parts like these again.

It’s a shame Shimano didn’t continue on with the 7700 series as they did with the 7400 series. I understand they kept making the 7710 Track series (crankset, bottom bracket, front hub specifically). There something aesthetically pleasing to the eye to the components which Shimano seems to have lost with every new series they introduce. When the 25th Anniversary Box came out in 1998, some older roadies scoffed; it didn’t look nearly as beautiful as Campagnolo’s 50th Anniversary Super Record set back in 1983. I honestly like both sets, the only difference is Giuseppe Saronni actually raced his Colnago with the Campy 50th Anniversary set on his bike, when he won the UCI World’s in 1982. How many can say that they won a huge race with the DA 25th? Personally, I wish there was. But then of course it was the L…. Years.

Is it me or do the new road component sets from Shimano, Campagnolo and SRAM….(sigh)?

The Dura Ace 7700 was a league of its own followed closely by the 7800. I prefer the fc7700 cranks to the fc7400 and fc7800

I picked up a 25th Anniversary headset locknut and top cone from eBay. Mirror polished compared to the milky polishing on the regular 7700 pieces. Probably will install them over the winter break.

When I first saw the 7800 cranks, that’s when I knew Dura Ace would never be as classy as the previous versions. They haven’t proven me wrong in the years since. The black rear derailleurs look like something off the Batmobile.

It is even worse with the br 9000 rim brakes or the very last Dura Ace derailleur which looks like an XTR shadow derailleur . When Dura Ace lost its polish glossy finish for something dark and not really Dura Ace like, it is where it went wrong.

An apparent difference, though not visible in the photos, is that regular FD7700s have a plastic cover over the spring; on every 25th Anniversary version I’ve seen (admittedly not a lot), the spring cover is missing.

Yep, 25th has no plastic cover.
I don't know if it's needed and a must.

Of course they aren’t necessary. But nice to have. Wonder why the Anniversary group didn’t use them? To show off the spring?
