Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? 1968 bug w/ 1971 1600 motor. I swear it gave me a Herbie beep as I drove by it sitting on the lawn with "For Sale" sign in windsheild.....I bought it and it lived up to its lemon yellow color for the next two years. I bummed a lot of rides, spent a lot of dough and wound up junking the poor little critter. But it was fun nonetheless

Ouff...too many K-Mart Specials to list! So I think I'll just go with the ones that actually meant something to me and those that lasted the longest. Here goes...

1994 Pacific (Marroon) : Gift (can't remember the name) - Bloody thing lasted a week, got chased by a HUGE dog and hit a 2 foot high curb (the bike, not the dog) and totally bent the frame up.

1995 Nishiki Bravo (Marroon) : Gift - Lasted 6 years, my first true love of cycling started with this bike. I think the frame is still in my parent's basement...

2002 Nishiki Bravo (Marroon) : Self-bought - LOVED this one, sadly, a few of the local babboons decided it'd be fun to trample her to pieces...the whole rear triangle and wheel became essentially, a work of mad art... She's now off on a trail somewhere in the sky...

2006 Mercier Galaxy (Metallic French Blue) : Self-bought - My current roadie, and quite possibly one of the nicest bikes I've ever had!

2006 Trek 820 (Copper/grey) : Gift - Heavy, slow, but surprisingly good in bad weather!

2006 Bianchi Bergamo (Bright, happy Orange!!!) : Gift to self... - My new commuter, she'll be arriving tomorrow!

I've just realised that I seem to follow a theme with the colours of all my bikes...

Yo! Blue Mercier New Brunswick guy!

I pass you every Tuesday and Thursday on my way to my Chaucer class. I'm the guy on a black track bike with red tires and grips. Mondrian-styled ReLoad bag. You're always cruising, and so am I!

blue and white Columbia BMX freestyle
20" Diamondback mtb
chrome Dyno VFR (fell A LOT off this bike)
Diamondback Sorrento (my first mtb, really started the love affair)
ProFlex 656
ProFlex 856 (hand-me-down from my dad, still have it, but it's in pieces)
98' Specialized Stumpjumper Pro
99' Specialized S-Works hardtail frame (replaced damaged Stumpjumper, still my #1 mtb, but no stock parts left on it)
00' Lemond Buenos Aires (recently put a Dura-Ace 10 group on it)
99' Specialized S-Works FSR (hand-me-down from my dad)
Huffy BMX made into chopper (made it 6 years and counting)
found Murray cruiser (parted for chopper and ditched)
old Schwinn Collegate (tall bike project that never happened)
Toys R Us Runt mini bike
Bianchi DISS (old it to my brother )
Specialized Langster
Schwinn World Sport fixie conversion (main town ride)
old Univega road bike turned into 700c cruiser (it has pegs)

And, in the spirit of the thread:

-1992-3 Murray something or other. It looked BMX cruiser-ish. My brothers and I set up jumps into the local retention pond when it was dry. Destroyed.
-Generic Mountain bike. grip-shift, 18-speed's or something. It was a silly bike.
-Haro something or other. Never used for it's intended purpose.
-1982-3 Univega Supra Sport. 12-speeds. I loved that bike. It got thrown off the back of my dorm building freshman year. I cold-set the rear-triangle and it's now my girlfriends fixed.
-1976 Raleigh Grand Prix. My first conversion. Ugly as sin. BB creaked. Brake broke.
-2005 Spicer track frame with IRO rear wheel, Ritchey aero front, risers, sugino messenger cranks. It's my "bling on a budget" bike.
-199? Raleigh Police Patrol bike. Surly rigid fork. Not done yet. I'm thinking 3-speed internal for the rear or another IRO fixed.
-Whatever I manage to pick up at T-Town this weekend!!

actual brand name bikes, and not ones that my dad or myself pulled out of the trash and fixed up:

GT Pro Series 1990, raced BMX for 3 years with it
Yosemite Yakota 1994, rigid moutain bike, is that company even around anymore?
Surly Instigator 2002
Schwinn Traveller, rode as a ten speed for a year, then converted to fixed
Fuji Track 2002

there are also the tons of bmx bikes that me and my dad would find, fix up and then paint
two lowriders, one chopped and raked
a cool as hell chopper bicycle from either the late 60's or early 70's that my dad pulled out of a house he was rewiring
lots of other random bikes, we may have been poor, but we were good as hell at taking trash and turning it into something awesome

Of the last 15 bikes on the list, I still have 14. I have included a couple of bikes that aren't built up yet, but I have 90% of the parts to do it.

I've owned and ridden a ****load of bikes that were purchased or acquired just to sell and in the interest of not crashing the server, I've left them off the list.

man...i can't remember the models of some of the mountain bikes i've had. i don't know which mercian i have now. maybe if i post pics of it someday, somebody can tell me.

1. murray bmx
My first bike at age 8. Black frame with black top tube pad, stem pad and handle bar pad. One day an older kid with a speedometer on his road bike clocked me at 20 mph. Not sure if that was accurate, but I accept it as fact. Kinda sad....haven't gotten much faster since.

2. redline rl20a
Probably put more miles on this thing than any single bike I've owned. I idolized R.L. Osborne...he had the tongue wag down way before Michael Jordan.

3. raleigh mountain bike
Worst bike I've ever owned. Slow as molasses and heavy as h3ll.

4. haro mountain bike
Decent commuter. Wish i woulda held onto it.

5. k2 zed 3.0
I've put thousands of miles on this thing. Currently my bad weather/snow bike. I thought about getting rid of it after I went fixed, but it's been great this winter.

6. 1984 Trek 400 (fixed conversion)
My first fixed gear! Picked this baby up for $65 on craiglist as a geared bike, went single speed and then fixed. It was just too big.

7. Leader 735R (2001 Campy Daytona Group)
First road bike. It is also too big. For some reason it took me having 2 large bikes to figure out I really needed a 50 or 51cm. Still have it but wanna put the components on a smaller steel frame eventually.

8. 1978 Mercian ? (fixed conversion)
Picked it up at veloswap this year and immediately converted it. It's my favorite ride. Can't wait for some decent weather so I can take it out!

edit: added note on each bike

Some girls bike (not just any girls bike, my older sisters girls bike, make of which I've no clue)
Toy's'rus "bmx"
Toy's'rus "bmx"
Schwinn road bike
Raleigh road bike
GT Mach 1
Norco ? mtb
Trek 950
Specialized Stumpjumper
Specialized Hardrock
Trek 9200? (worst FS ever, converted to funnycar speedster)
Bridgestone MB-Zip
Cannondale cad? road
Barracuda Comp
Yokota ? (mtb)
Bianchi road
Breezer Thunder
Breezer Storm
Breezer Lightning
Lemond Alp d'Huez
Trek 9500? 9800?
Devinci ? (road, stolen so quickly I barely knew 'er)
Urbanite fixed
Cannondale cad5

I counted full bikes, like many here it gets stupid if I try to add in frames built up or swapped, or the bikes you get or build then trade or sell having ridden them only a bit, or clown bikes or unicycles.

i prefaced them with the year i got them followed by the year they were if they weren't new

1987 blue schwinn bmx(still at my parent's vacation home)
1992- 3 seperate Huffy Mudslingers all of which were stolen, the last theft i was riding it and my parents decided we should move to a safer neighborhood despite loving that house, led to years of self blame issues
1993- Magna mountain bike(first bike i purchased myself, died in my first car to bike collision in 1999)
1999- Sparkly Orange Caloi one speed beach cruiser(still at my parent's vacation home)
2000- Huffy women's mountain bike eventually abadoned in the basement of a home my girlfriend at the time had rented
2003- a 1984 blue Schwinn Worldsport died in my second car to bike collision
2005- 1970's Crescent Pepita Special, got it for free for helping my uncle move, i also got my first real job that day, sweet ride, tight geometry vitus 979 frame, downtube dent turned into downtube crack one day while riding to work
2006- 1977 Raleigh Grand Prix, 15 dollar garage sale special, came with campy brakes, deraillers, shifters and hubs, this is still my bike, it's a little heavier than it should be but so am i, current set up is sakae fork, forumla hub in the rear laced to sun rim, campy hub laced to "gentleman" rim up front, nitto tt bars, itm goccia stem, rolls saddle, sugino mighty cranks and bb(they also came on the bike), it's not the nicest bike in the world but i love it and ride it everyday,

Blue coaster brake kids bike with tubing bent 180" that is sort of a combined chainstay, seat stay and rear rack. I saw one of these exact frames at a critical mass last year, that was fun.

Fake MX full suspension (!) BMX, with yellow fenders.

Free Spirit 10speed, taken out for 5-10 km road rides up the highway in Grades 4-5. Eventually destroyed by local goons.

Kuwahara MTB: my transition from bike boom to mtbing. What the hell happened to that bike?

Bridgestone MB-2. Still have that bike. It's pretty beat upon, the frame is way too small for me and the front rim is toast but everything else works. Anyone want? It's yours for the price of shipping.

Canadian Tire 60s cruiser: Found at thrift for $12. Taking it on 10-20km road rides got me back into biking after a five year hiatus, and made me immediately want something more serious. Ergo:

Devinci Caribou tourer/ commuter. Found at pawn for $400. Nice Al frame, XT rear derailleur, 105 brifters, Opus CF seatpost, Deore/ Mavic wheels... not bad! Commuting on this bike got me into way better shape, and it saw me through my first century last summer. Reading Sheldon made me want to get a fixed conversion going, so...

Marinoni fixed conversion. Nice Columbus frame w. Campy dropouts, shaved and powdercoated ( ) and built up by me at great expense for long distance rides and for looking sexy.

-small blue bike with white grips/chainguard/training wheels. second hand from a kid down the street. single speed. coaster brake. no idea what happened to it.

-small red huffy with black effects. christmas '86. single speed. coaster brake. first thing i did on that bike: run into a telephone pole, broke off the reflector. i have the video. man, i did everything on that bike. stolen in fifth grade. busted.

-black with yellow and green splatterpaint. sixth grade. i think it was a huffy mt. fury? walmart bike with flat bars. 18 speed. got rid of it sometime after high school. who rides bikes? i still remember going down huge hills in the woods with my little sister. how did we not hit stumps or holes?

-blue/silver/black crappy roadmaster from walmart. four or five years ago. i got tired of being flabby and out of shape and told myself i would start riding a bike. i had no idea that walmart was bad. i think i rode it twice and gave it away.

-blue Free Spirit Dynasty 10 speed with positron shifting. early 2006. went back to my DIY roots and stopped by a local bike coop called Krank It Up. the bike was mostly put together. i bought tires and tubes and went home. started riding fairly regularly. got curious and started taking things apart. had no idea what i was doing. found out from sheldon brown that i didn't need all those extra parts, so i took off whatever i could with a screwdriver and a pair of robogrips. it's now just a five speed (rear der only) and i'm stripping it down for parts. i still have it though.

-light blue Schwinn 1984 World (with yellow and white decals). it was my aunt's bike back in her college days. we're about the same height so she gave it to me. all it needed was new tubes and tires. taking it by car to my LBS, the car rack came undone around a sharp corner and the bike swung under my car and i crushed the rear wheel. bummer. i bought a cheap new wheel, a SS freewheel and a new chain and my SS days were alive again. just recently, i got a nicer set of cranks (fsa) and got rid of that original road double. the paint is chipped in places and it's not the best bike in the world, but i love it to death.

[edit:] you know what, screw that. it's a great bike and if you say "beater", i'll beat you.

give me more money and i'll try to add to this list.

[edit:] i forgot that i have a couple other things: 1) a dumpstered huffy santa fe. brown beige and orange. a crappy bike but it could be fun for the whole family. 2) a random no-name black lugged frame.

plywood and paint cans was my favorite, because for some reason we had an abundance of cans, and i could make a pretty tall ramp, but occasionally i would use concrete blocks or 5gallon buckets. i don't remember ever falling off, bailing, or dying.

Looks like fun. Here goes:

Tiny red Skeppshult
Slightly bigger blue Skeppshult
DBS 3-speed (broke the rear hub)
Crappy DBS MTB (got stolen)
Decent DBS MTB (still sits in parents garage)
NoName roadbike (actually said NoName on the downtube!)
Some BMX along the way
Zeus roadbike (raced on for some years, currently set up SS)
F.Moser M76 roadbike
Master track bike (currently in build)

By the way, Skeppshult is a swedish maker of frying pans and ridiculously heavy steel frames. DBS is a norweigan brand.
