Just got a Pinarello Treviso

Picked this up on Friday. Funny, a couple months ago I didn't have an Italian bike, now have 3. Got to stop buying and sell a few other bikes, can't move in the basement. Hard when a deal shows up, around here a good price for a desirable bike is unusual - and winter is coming.

Owner said he worked at a bike shop back in the day and picked up the frame. Then built it up himself - I suspect from the sale parts bins at the shop. Suntour Sprint rear derailleur and crank, Suntour Superbe front derailleur, Dura Ace brakes and levers, Campy hubs and Ambrosio Montreal tubular rims.
More tubular rims - not sure if I have a wheel available or not.

Anyone put a date to it, tubing type? Looks like double water bottle cages - the seat tube ones are kinda hidden.

Cool bike, love the paint. I'm thinking it is a 1985 era bike.

That bike is screaming for those tubies. Even cheap tubies. Black or almost any color!

Not sure why, but I really love seeing Italian bikes with Suntour components.

Cleaned, polished, waxed and greased.
The Sprint rear derailleur has a maximum of 26 cog. Had to order in a freewheel to match. It's a 26 now and had to wind the B screw in and play with the chain length to get it to shift without crunching.

Great find! IIRC that is color scheme is called "Italian Ice" I really like riding my '91 Montello, even with clinchers (23/25). Most likely you will find that 25's are the max fit, so tubies are a great choice.

Looks very nice all cleaned up and dressed for the dance. I have the same cluster of cogs on the freewheel of the Medici, its nice to have that 26T to fall back on when the roads take an upward direction. Great job and I hope that she rides as good as she looks.

I concur with cb400bill. It's almost certainly a 1985 model, possibly 1986. The Arco LA84 paint scheme was a custom creation for the 1984 American Savings/Dia-Compe team. It didn't become a factory offering until after Grewal won the 1984 Olympics. A pump peg and front derailleur tab were standard fittings on the Treviso in 1987, so it's earlier than that. I don't have any 1986 literature but based on old advertisements the Montello got the pump peg in 1986 and if you choose to assume that they introduced it across the line, then it should be a 1985.

Italian Ice was different fade scheme, involving read, blue and green. The subject paint scheme is Arco LA84. Arco is Italian for rainbow and the LA84 refers to Alexi Grewal's gold medal in the road race at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. The paint scheme was developed for the 1984 American Savings/Dia-Compe team, for which Grewal rode. Per team manager Lon Pettyjohn, the paint scheme was created during a meeting at the Long Beach bicycle show with the reps from Denver Spoke, Dia-Compe and Gita. They couldn't decide on a colour, so Giorgio Andretta (Gita Sporting Goods, the Pinarello distributor) suggested they combine them all.

I really like this color scheme whatever name it has. I just think of it as the Alexi Grewal color scheme or spumoni colors. This is a really nice bike and a fine score.

Is it a good fit for you? I think that is my size. Wouldn't mind something like that. Question: is the Top tube on the Pinerello Treviso considered Short, medium, long avg?

It seems I am really good at pulling great information out of knowledgeable people with my statements of error lately! Thanks T-Mar for the clarification and history! I have noticed the difference and wondered where it fit between the catalogues.

My research has led me to take the 1985 catalogue with a grain of salt. The bicycles are all depicted as having a single Pinarello logo on the seat tube, located on the front of the tube. However, if you look at the frame section, you'll see that the pictured Montello frame and one of the Record frames have seat tubes with two Pinarello logos, one on each side. You'll also notice that the frames with the dual seat tube logos are the only ones with dual bottle bosses. Shortly after dual bottle bosses started becoming popular, the manufacturers realized that a 2nd bottle would partially obscure a single logo on the front on the seat tube. This was not good, from a marketing standpoint. Consequently, there was a big shift to dual seat tube logos in the mid-1980s, at about the same time that dual bottle bosses started to appear.

The photos for the 1985 catalogue would have to have been taken some time in late 1984 to allow for layout, approval, printing and distribution. Consequently, they may not be a completely accurate representation of the 1985 models. It appears the Pinarello was just in the process of phasing-in dual bottle bosses. I've never seen anything to suggest that single or dual bosses were an option in 1985 and suspect that the actual 1985 production had dual bottle bosses and dual seat tube logos on SL and SLX frames.

Hey, lets go for a ride together sometime:

Mine still had the floor tag from Denver Spoke bike shop and it says 1985 on it.

Sold this on eBay last year or so, wall art to a guy that raced Pinarello carbon bikes, NYC dude as I recall

I know the feeling on needing to quit buying and start selling --- I have bored the heck out of the populace here with my incessant rambling about Italian stuff, parts bike pickups , and other things like that over the past few months --- I used to appreciate older bikes to look at, but I rode the late model stuff- faster and more convenient ---- Now i'm a C&V nut job like the rest
-- Can't help but think i'd be a couple of grand in the black if I actually sold all the framesets and unwanted parts/wheelsets etc from my strippers

The parts are a bit of a mash-up, but its all quality stuff --- bike looks good ! -- I'm in the camp that would also leave the tubies on there

Slash5 hasn’t been around for awhile. Personally if this was me I’d leave the Suntour on it. Everyone puts Campanutello on their Italian bikes but this a pretty close replica to a semi famous Olympic bike. Plus that Suntour RD will shift a lot smoother.
