Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Asking for a friend. How fast do brake pads wear, relative to tires? On an automobile. Disc front, drum rear. Can I figure brake pad wear by looking at the tires? Keep in mind that practically all of our driving is stop and go. Speed bumps everywhere instead of traffic cops and radar. We're getting ready for a trip to Belize. About 30,000 miles on the new car. About 1500 miles roundtrip

Built in ‘07 as a spec. Bought it from the builder in ‘08 thanks to the Dubya recession.

You have to look at the pads. You might be able to see all of the pads with a small mirror, otherwise you'll have to take the wheels off.

Pull a front wheel off, and look at the pad wear indicator thru the caliper. If the fronts are good, you should be good.

Get Big John and Ls’s opinion though as they have wrenched more times than I’ve driven.

Edit, he beat me to it.

I finished mowing, took a shower, and the rain began falling. In that order.

So, I was gonna do about 60 miles today, including going up Old La Honda, 3.1 miles of 7.2% average gradient. On the way there, on a short, fast descent, I took a bee or other stinging insect in the mouth at 35 mph. It managed to sting me before splattering all over my teeth.

It didn't hurt that much, but I was pretty sure it stung me, so I decided maybe a hard climb wasn't the best idea. 20 or so minutes later, the corner of my lip was swollen and maybe a little hard, and maybe a little numb, so I made The Call Of Shame, and because Mrs. GeneJockey didn't pick up, I left The Voicemail Of Shame, and sent The Text Messages Of Shame. I estimated where I'd be in 1/2 hour and told her to meet me there, for The Ride Of Shame.

Of course, by the time I got there, the swelling had subsided, it didn't hurt as much, etc. Could have just ridden home, and at least gotten 48 miles in. Oh, well. "Discretion is the better part of valor."

It tasted kinda bitter. Definitely not on board with the new Insect Based Diet. Ewwww.

I did the 55 mile club ride yesterday and there were only 9 of us at the start. Before we started this one weird guy vanished. He didn't say anything, just wasn't there anymore. Several miles into it another guy dropped off, said he had to be somewhere. As soon as the first hills came we lost another one. He hasn't been on the bike but I expected him to stay on a little longer. Found out later he did go about 50 on the day, his longest in years.

We got mixed in with another group and our leaders got ahead so while trying to get back to them my friend was right-hooked by a Mercedes. She skidded and almost hit the car but saved it. We both yelled but the driver didn't even look our way.
Later, I broke a spoke. Jinxed myself the other day when I said I haven't broken one in a long time. I wobbled the last 15 miles back to the car.

My friend called to tell me one of the riders on a different ride was hit by a car. He was descending a curvy road and a driver tried to pass him in a turn and just ran into him. His wife picked him up and took him to the hospital and I don't know what injuries he has. The guy who called said another rider went off on the driver and had to be told to calm down.

Lawn mowing activity achieved.

Stopped raining at 10 and waited for it to dry up a bit. It has been sunny since 3 ish. Not complaining but I thought this tropical storm was going to hang out a while. I'm so out of shape that it was a hard workout. #HowTheMightyHaveFallen

That doesn't sound good.

How much elapse time between insect entering mouth and sting?

I perceived them as simultaneous.

Which reminds me of a joke Mrs. Genejockey likes to tell, corrected for this situation:
What's the last thing to got through a bug's mind as it hits the windshield GeneJockey's teeth?

His own end.
