Training Status??? (IV)

resisted the urge to do the easy thing (jump on the trainer) for a 2hr z2 ride and did the normal human thing and went outside on a nice day. No ragrets, about 2.5hrs, 104tss. ctl is around 83 and tsb is at +13 so a little too fresh lol starting a new block tomorrow (with a dreaded ftp test, though I really doubt it's changed). Kind of feeling like I want to focus on sweet spot/long endurance as I'm kind of shifting some of my focus away from road racing and thinking ahead to cross season plus some other endurance events I'd like to do this summer (granfondo in europe, a gravel event, and some recreational centuries).

784tss week for me (raced 4 times in 2 days). Surprisingly, I felt best in my last race (M123 circuit race), but I'm pretty knackered today.

Nailed by bronchitis; beware the highway rest stop and its world-weary travelers. Still feel bleh. Someday I'll get through a season (or at least a couple of ****ing months) without injury or sickness.

trainerroad ramp test this morning, the good, I made it 19mins and powered through things getting tough. the not so good, probably mentally checked out at the end of the last interval I thought I could do (357w) and didn't even attempt to try the 374w interval. The algorithm is a little wonky, as it took the last total min (where I tailed off after finishing a full min), as opposed to the best 1min (really the last interval). All in all, my ftp is the same as I've had it (275), all that work for nothing lol

it was nice out and 30tss from my ramp test wasn't enough, went for a 3.25 hr ride, about 54miles and 140tss. I really wouldn't mind throwing all structured training to the wayside for now and just do big volume

Good day today. Cat 4 upgrade approved, so I’m not a Cat 5 anymore.
Trainerroad ramp test. Maxed out at 372W. Man, its like a light switch, I was just done. FTP is now 284 according to the magic box.
So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.

Got the 9 stitches in my finger removed today, so of course I went for a ride - and unlike yesterday, every bump didn't hurt my damn finger! (Stitches were bumping up agains the gauze wrap I guess)
Legs feel about as good as they every have. Grip with cut index finger isn't 100%, but good enough to sprint (hit 1100w, which is close to my max).
After getting home I undid the wrap to see the finger, to find that the steri-strips had come off and the wound was basically open! The top of the skin hasn't quite sealed basically. Kind of gross. But it doesn't hurt, and there's no blood so... I guess it's ok?
Apparently it's called "wound dehiscence" - btw, don't image-google that.

3 days off in Austin didn't help my wasteline, but rest allowed me to get surprisingly close to some all-time power numbers. If only I wasn't +10lbs from when I was getting them in 2014. Only equated to 2 seconds off my pr on the little power climb, at least.

I lost it last night. I went into the group ride expecting a certain thing, and that thing didn't happen. After that the wheels just came off and it got worse. At the end I was cussing and swearing (when no one was around) and ready to toss my bike.
I don't really know if that's a good thing. I've been pretty positive lately (even on bad days) and this is the first tantrum I've had in a few years. Maybe I should find another sport.

Had to do my workout in the evening again because of a conference and the last two nights on the roads reminded me how lucky I am that I trained myself to workout at the break of dawn. 5x60-90 sec intervals sprint/crush/sprint
Cat 2
After crashing last week I took a day off from the bike and then did a BUNCH of mountain biking last weekend while I was in GJ for collegiate Nationals. Such awesome trails out there. Did three 1.5 hour rides or so and a 3 hour mtb ride. Just gorgeous terrain and some really tough, technical riding which was fun.
Got back late sunday, took Monday off. Did the race ride last night on my TT bike which was.. fun. Accelerating on a 55t is hard and when your forced to riding the "wings" whenever you're not on the front it isn't all that comfortable. But my road bike is still broke so no other bike to ride. My new bike should be here soon. Just in time for it to rain this weekend.
Also got the keys to my new apartment which is closer to work. I commuted in and out today on my cx bike. About 50 minutes in and out, but I added a small little gravel section on the way back. I need to get a shorter stem for my cx bike. Was not comfortable on it today.

I strained my quad (Vastus Medialis) lifting weights. Its not a main cycling muscle so it really only twinges when I put in big efforts, but it was getting worse. A session of eStim and Graston seemed to have really helped, and I'm on the fence about racing on Saturday. We'll see how it feels on my commute home (which is all uphill).
Not sure about lifting during race season. It seems to help but I'm useless the next day and sometimes the day after. 2x a week kills all my other efforts, 1 seems tolerable. So its either 1x a week or none until mid August.

3's and 5's. Felt strong, like racing 4 times this weekend jumpstarted something. I like where this is going.

Tuesday was still a bit sore from the big Sunday ride, so skipped the hard workouts and did a social ride. Still we rode a good pace & I got in a few hard efforts for 135 TSS
Yesterday I did the Mike's Bikes "Col du Pantoll" race ride. Back to the classic route which we didn't do last year due to washed out roads. All out effort to get dropped on a hill, push solo into a headwind for 20 minutes chasing, then a PR up Panoramic climb for 23.5 minutes at 103%. And one guy did it in sub 17. 40% faster. 250 TSS for the day.
At -41 now and highest CTL of the year. Gonna take it easy for a few days and race on Sunday perhaps.

Over unders, 1 min@ 95%, 1 min ramp to 105%, 1 min ramp down, 12 mins x 3. Kinda fell apart during the last set, but struggled through.

Been a lazy rest week. and not the highest TSS block before. I'll put it 4 or so tomorrow but I should start next week in earnest with a CTL a little over 80 and a hugely positive TSB. Right now it's looking like things will stay a little flat CTL wise with some hammerimg and racing to keep things sharp. I should be able to put some big volume in over mem. day weekend though so maybe I'll end this block nice and fatigued for once.

hey hey, great to see you riding again. I feel like I saw you a couple of times when I was out on the rail-trail with Dirty before I left town.
I took a long break from anything resembling "serious" training. First I quit crit racing when I broke my shifter and wheel in a rainy Tampa Twilight. It was brutal... something like 45 started and 18 finished the race. I know a few guys who went down multiple times. Broke my **** pretty good and busted open my elbow where it was still healing from a previous crash. Had to get stitches. Then... moving cross country, complete career change, etc.
I now live less than half an hour from a velodrome for the first time ever. I've done a few omnium nights and just got a track bike. Still not training much, but I get out for short hard rides once or twice a week. I'm actually feeling somewhat motivated to go fast again.

Believe it or not I am really slow now.

I don't even look at numbers anymore when I'm training. My power is lower than when I first got a power meter. Just trying to make the pedals go 'round.
Trash week for training. I didn't go to race night because I worked outside in the rain all day, thought for sure it would be canceled. Lo and behold the weather was beautiful. Oh well. Weather is gonna be world-class this weekend, gonna do some fun rides. "Free for all" ride like a dingus by myself tomorrow, then nice and steady with a coworker on Sunday. "Training."
