Jimmy Don Rodgers: Still in prison?
We're coming up on the 10th anniversary of the day that a drunk driver killed cyclist Ken Kifer in Alabama.
That driver, Jimmy Don Rodgers, pled guilty to manslaughter in 2004 and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. He came up for parole in 2005 but failed a drug test. I haven't heard anything since.
Does anybody know what Mr Rodgers is up to these days?

If that link doesn't work, his scheduled release date is 9/11/2023
The dumb thing is that, he is at Holman in Alabama, which amounts to a prison camp. I have seen inmates from Holman profiled a number of times on cable. So, He is not kept in a 6-by-4-by-8ft. cell. They actually have very loose prison conditions at Holman. Some prisoners can actually plant a garden outside their cell.

Considering his crime, it could be argued, and I'd agree with the contention, that he went to prison as a bit of an animal. Hopefully, when he returns to society in another decade he will be ready to be a civilized human being. I think allowing prisoners to plant gardens may well help with this transformation.
This.
As an example, the SHU concept in the California system is an egregious overreach of penal management.

Be very surprised if he doesn't live in a pod with 40-50 other inmates instead of his own cell. The fact he was up for parole not even 2 years after his "20 year sentence" is bulls..t of the highest degree.
Ken Kifer had one of the very best bike websites around. The fact he is still fondly remembered here years after his death speaks to how much he meant to the bicycling community.

Uh, Holman is a state prison. With Alabama's death row no less. I have never heard of anybody getting 20 years for a DWI manslaughter, but that is a long time no matter where you do your bid.
