I take seriously all the elements that I allow into my life, maybe especially my music. I am not the only one who equates disco/rap and loud volume with lack-of-intellect. I do not ride with music, nor do I need music to motivate or guide me. To use supplemental aids in this way is to take the easy way out and not rely on one's own ambition.
I do not smile while I am training. What would I be smiling for? Imagining a funny joke? I don't get it. Do you see any competitive cyclists smiling while training or racing? I'd rather stay focused.
People who need high volume and brain-dead music are the ones I see who are not even breaking a sweat. I'm always the one trying hardest.
If you're looking for conformity or the type who is a pathological "follower", then you probably don't get along with people who call the shots in their life and think for themselves. @Machka, I am unable to read your comments and posts.

Ah, perhaps a quote from Forbes would go well here:
In a study conducted in the UK (using an electromagnetic brain scan machine and heart-rate monitor to create "mood-boosting values" for various stimuli), British researchers found that one smile can provide the same level of brain stimulation as up to 2,000 chocolate bars; they also found that smiling can be as stimulating as receiving up to 16,000 Pounds Sterling in cash.
I absolutely love the social value to be found in group rides. Social activity is good for you.
You will enjoy better mental health. Interacting with others boosts feelings of well-being and decreases feelings of depression. Research has shown that one sure way of improving your mood is to work on building social connections. You may even lower your risk of dementia.
We should all know that we are not the smartest nor the fastest. On any given day, there is always someone who can drop you.

I'd rather approach my problems directly and do what I can to rectify the situation.
If that doesn't work, I'll petition for divine intercession.
Smile the whole time.
I don't want the class to think I'm on anti-anxiety meds.
If you trained as hard as I do, you'd probably save most of your smiling for afterward.

Thanks for the pearls of wisdom. When you have to go to the bathroom, do you sit there and wait for the universe to take care of it? Do you accept it as a necessary state-of-being? For some, a direct approach is best when the insult is an egregious one (disco) and salvation is well nigh.

Easy solution, just put a pair of those softy foam earplugs in your wallet. They come in handy. And it's not just disco at the muti-purpose gym, you should hear the crap they play at the Crossfit garage, where real music goes to die.
Noise pollution is an outrage, but it doesn't get talked about like it was 30 years ago -- perhaps everyone's truly desensitized. Finding quiet is a real trick 'round here.

I have not tried this. Upon reflection, it seems that if I took that route, I would be subjecting my instructor (who, after all, is just human) to the same over-stimulation that he/she is subjecting me to with their "music". What I propose, instead, is covertly replacing their "music" with something like Handel's Water Music Suite in D, coupled with sounds of falling rain, at a proper, moderate volume, so that when he/she switches it on, they crumble to the floor in agony and confusion, desperately and futilely attempting to comprehend the event.
